Simon
Whilst I try and understand the upset caused to Muslims by the publication of the cartoons in Denmark and France. I cannot understand how the reaction is justified. I have heard islamic leaders saying that this is not right but I have not heard any of these leaders stand up in front of the crowds and say 'stop, what you are doing is not a proper response'. Is it OK for crowds to carry placards saying, 'Kill Danish', 'Kill French' 'Kill Westerners' 'Kill anyone'. It seems the public in the Europe and the West can't question religion for fear of death threats. And yes cartoons do ask questions or present perceptions. Are we going to have more legislation which prohibits any questioning, paradying etc of the world religions because of this over reaction. Firstly, you are talking about offending the members of the largest and one of the oldest religions of all time by printing pictures of a prophet who's image should not be printed (going against the religion). Next, I just watched the news and saw about 20 imans(I think they are imans??) literally grappling with rioters and taking flags, bottles and rocks off them and shouting at them to go home. I then see a number of local and british clerics denouncing them (EDIT - by them I refer to the rioters) A large number of the protesters went home in disgust after the violence kicked off. for the record i'm CofE
JohnA
It's more about a show of strength and who calls the shots in European politics. All this violence and protests just prove that there is an underlying anger against the 'west'. Oh well, when the pan-European ID cards become mandatory, we'll see who's gonna queue begging for one...

Oldest religion? It was founded by Mohammed the Prophet around 622AD. This bunch of muppets protesting are the muslim equivelent of the BNP and do not represent 99.999% of Muslims. Simon
That wasn't shown on the news I saw. so I take that bit back. I am only trying to understand what looks like an overreaction to me. If you're saying thAt because it is one of the oldest religions then it should not be questioned. It is Islamic Law that states that their prophet should not be pictured, not my law. It's like telling a muslim they can only have one wife because it Christian Law. But I still don't think the reaction is a valid response and in my eyes does Islam no favours, if anything it can only reinforce the general perception bandied by the media and politicians. Simon
They may only represent 0.00001 % but they are what the media are protraying as the muslim response so isn't everyone going to think they actually represent a larger proportion? Gazboy
Police did arrest two guys outside the London Danish embassy the other day for carrying placards, not the 'we're gonna cut your heads off' placards, but two blokes who went there with a placard of Mohammad to 'stir things up a little'. Unbelieveable. At risk of getting flammed, muslims have to realise that the west is not covered , nor ruled by muslim or Sharia law- Denmark is a protestant state and lives by it's rules. Not that christians are blameless- correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't a high ranking Catholic official state that condom makers deliberately put holes in their condoms so you catch HIV? Don't some christians in the US bible belt want to ban abortion too?

I think most do m8, but the minority are the ones out there who want to turn the west into a 'Taleban' society. Its not a Christian vs Muslim thing at all, they even slaughter their own to achieve what they want, look at Algeria.

I don't mean to be rude, really I don't- but did you read the articles, or just look at the pictures? Remember that every may the great unwashed sponging scum against capitalism have a riot- pictures in the paper the next day- are those losers representatives of Joe Bloke? They ain't representing me, that's for sure.

Simon
Exactly Gazboy, not everywhere is Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, etc. Is it right to force your beliefs and it's laws on those people and states that are not of your faith. I personnally don't think so. I do however think that we should all respect each others right to believe in whatever we find comfort in. However this right to believe in something that is not of the majority view is more freely available in some countries than in others. Obviously the publication of the cartoons is disrespectful to muslims, but the reaction, even by the few hundred is disproportionate I think. Perhaps more exposure of the peaceful protests would help, but the media caters to our demands and 'people' would, it seems, rather see burning buildings and bombs than peaceful dialogue between people. Just look at the number of deliberately confrontational shows that air on tv these days.

No perhaps it's just a big 'guilt trip' that they are trying on the west so getting away with a lot that wouldn't otherwise be tolerated. No they don't but I'm sure there are some vegetarianists in the USA who would love too.
