SimonB
Ok mechanical gurus, here one for you. I've got a Greddy oil filter relocation kit I am putting on. The suggested place to relocate the filter to in the instructions is under the car by the gearbox, but still a bit of a pain to get to without a ramp. So I found the location shown in the pic. It's a fair bit higher up than standard though, so the question is does that matter ? Is is going to effect the oil supply or will it be OK? And yes, the bonnet does close before anyone asks! Terminator
That would make it the highest point for you oil system, but given the pressure, I don’t think it should be a problem IMHO. Just on a non technical note it is going to make a real mess when you change your filter, unless you can design something to act as a half pint catch can. I it is bad enough with it at a slight angle.
Dragonball
I really would put it underneath as it will be almost impossible to change Just buy a 2 tonne jack and get under there lad!
Guest Terry S
I would remove the charcoal canister ( to the right of where you've indicated) and the bolt it to the Bulkhead.
Chris Wilson
Hmm, you won't like what I am going to say, but from what I can see the adaptor has push on hose fittings... In a pressure fed filter set up (this is one) you should NEVER use push on fittings, ALWAYS proper Aeroquip type ones with proper stainless braided lines with screwed fittings. Given the agg and the lack of an ideal space for the filter I can't see what real advantage it has over the stock one, and long lines in the small diameter these appear to be can drop flow. I said you wouldn't like it, but I feel I gotta tell it as I see it with something this engine critical.
Guest Terry S
agreed with the fittings. -10 lines should be ok though don't you think. I have no idea what the kit comes with though.
Terminator
Unless you can find a location that allows the filter to hang vertically, I can see no advantage to the stock position JMO
SimonB
Well, I ended up putting it under the car as per the instructions anyway, because the hoses wouldn't reach, and it looked a bit dodgy anyway. Had to modify the bracket too, and the bolt it's attached to is a total bugger to get to! Bit of a nightmare job really. The hoses are kind of "fake" braided, they're rubber with a braided sheath. They attach via circular hose clamps, not ideal but I don't think they're going anywhere, they're done up bloody tight! The advantages for me are that I can now change the filter without having to take the battery out and reach in that way or pur the car on ramps (which I don't have), and also the adapter thingy has holes for attaching sensors, so I now have oil temp and pressure sensors. Terminator
Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I would check those joins every couple of days over the next week or so for any signs of weeping. Chances are they will be fine, but it is worth checking to be safe. I presume you did this with an oil change, if so how much did it take to fill? Any chance of a few pics of the new filter location for future reference. Dragonball
Simon Would love to have a couple of pics of where you placed it etc Will be discussing/completing our oil relocation kit / oil cooler on my return and would really appreciate any input Cheers Paul
SimonB
Arrrggghhh!! The saga of my attempts to do this continues! I set off for the gumball thingy this morning and when I stopped there was oil smoke ! Turned back and had a look, I'm thinking the hoses are lose or something. Then I went inside and found the rubber gasket that is supposed to go between the centre hose and the adaptor sat on my table. Doh! Spent the afternoon taking the bloody thing off again to put it on. If I ever see another oil filter it'll be too soon! Anyway, sorted now, and here is a pic of where I relocated it to. It wouldn't actually fit as per the instructions, there's a pipe in the way, so I had to bolt the adaptor to the bracket they give you with one bolt rather than two to move it up a bit. There's a bolt on the gearbox that has a ground wire attached, that's what I undid to mount the bracket. Real bugger to get a wrench onto though.
