Warped again?

I can't remember the order of events which is annoying, but I've had new discs and pads fitted in the last 6 months, don't drive the car very much and definitely not very hard, and now I'm getting wobbling in the pedal and wheel under braking.

I think it's getting worse (but like I said don't drive it much), it almost feels like ABS is on constantly rather than a less frequent wobble that discs would give (if that makes sense), but the frequency does drop with speed so it's not ABS.

 

I think I need to get the wheels balanced (when I can spare £30!!), and I'd like to get the alignment checked as it hasn't been done since the new wheels were fitted, it does tramline more now than it used to but I'm hoping thats a balancing/alignment issue.

 

Haven't been at high speed really (90 leptons tops) so unsure if I get any vibration any higher than that - used to at 120 leps before alignment was done.

 

 

Please don't tell me I need to get another set of discs!!!

Trev, you'll also get wobbling through the wheel under braking if one of your wheel bearings has gone. Have you kerbed one of the wheels recently?

 

With the car jacked up, you'll feel side to side play on the wheel if the bearing is knackered. If it is the bearing, it'll most likely be the front nearside one that has gone.

 

PS. Definitely get the alignment checked if you have had new wheels fitted.

No the wheels were balanced and alignment done when the new wheels were fitted, but since then it hasn't been redone (should be done after a few thousand miles on new tyres).

 

There was very slight play in the offside front when the discs were done, not enough to worry about though. Actually come to think of it it does clonk on full right lock when coming off my drive!! How much is a bearing again? :(

 

I didn't do the brakes (don't trust myself with important bits like that), so don't know about gunk. Haven't checked runout as I don't have the guages for it.

Trev i reckon this could be the calipers sticking. On the jap calipers there are two sliding bolts that can seize. My lexus had the exact same symptoms re brake judder and freeing one of these bolts has sorted it.

 

To check, jack up front, wheels off, undo x1 14mm bolt on the top completely and the bottom one just slacken (the bolts are on the back of the caliper and face into the car). Then part of the caliper will pivot away from the disk, and at this point you need to check that this bit can move towards and away from you, and that the top (where you removed the whole bolt) can do so too. (they are bolt heads with little rubber boots - it should become alot clearer when you have a look)

 

If they are seized try and free with a 17mm socket, but heat might be required........

Hi guys n gals,

 

I know this is an old post, but wondered what came of it?

 

I have been chasing a wheel wobble under braking for fcuking ages, changed out discs, bearings and still come back after 2K miles. Even had them skimmed on the car, nope, still comes back.

 

Toyota did clock the run-out on the hubs and there was a small amount, but nothing abnormal (0.1mm max), this was pre-bearing change so will clock them again myself. i do have aftermarket 19's on , but discs and pads are toyota std UK set-up. Don't remember having wobble with my jap set-up, but was a few years back now. Wheels are running correctly on the hub, no silly large spacers (1.5mm spacer with hub-centric boss).

 

Can it be bushes? i really am tearing my hair out trying to fix this. Any experiences of this in the past would be much appreciated.:search:

Running heavy 19 rims and tyres adds gyroscopic loadings to the front wishbone bushes they were never designed to accept. Add forces from incorrect offset rims too, and it all conspires to make a tiny excitation from brake run out amplify into a knee trembler. BMW had huge issues on the old 5 and 7 series car as the bush compliance for NVH was soft. Add a few hard driven miles to them and a SLIGHT brake disc run out would excite a terrible wheel shake. I'd put a set of STOCK 17 oe 16 inch rims and tyres on, and if the judder goes away, then you have your answer.
