Gearbox question :)

BROARDSIDE

Recommended Posts

few people on here say that easily 600bhp possibly 800bhp but after that your lookikng at a new uprated gearbox, do a search on here and find the exact figures as those are rough guesses

On a W58? no chance if you want drive it daily. V160 is a different matter though...

he's on about the n/a AUTO, which is the same as the TT box, but with less clutches and things, isn't it? So.. it'd be less than the TT A340 box, but isn't it still called an A340?

I missed the NA auto bit from above. From what i've seen on here the NA auto is the same as the TT so will handle the same power. The code is A340E for the autobox

I think a lot of people think that, but the Toyota Technical stuff states various differences, one I remember being less clutches...

it's in the "What's new in the MK4" part of the Supra Resource stuff, which I can't for the life of me find right now.

Good grief you guys get in a pickle when you don't read the original post! ;) :p

NA auto is the same as the TT's (but the DIFF is different, not sure if it has the same power capacity as the TT DIFF)

The NA 5-speed (W58) isn't that strong (350-400 tops)

The NA 6-speed (V161) is the daddy :D

But remember with each of these gearbox options on the NA you get the NA's Diff.

Honestly dude.. the Toyota pdf file which lists "changes in the mk4" or "what's new in the mk4" or whatever it is, clearly gives differences for the na autobox..

Yes I have seen that somewhere too, but I have an NA as well and I swear its the same box.... I must admit I'm a little confused too.

mmm. It says they are both A340E, but that the TT has 7 clutch bands or something, and the NA has only 5.

I just wish I could find the document again..

NA auto vs. TT auto is ECT vs. ECTi as i recall? :) So...the NA auto is less intelligent then...? :D

Yep. The TT has "intelligent sporty control", and various other differences.

As the NZ site says:

The TT Auto gearbox (A340E) is a very strong auto, but it will break if you are running over 300rwkw. This auto is unique to the 2JZ-GTE engine, despite many other Toyota autos also being labelled as A340E autos.

Here are the differences in specifications - have a look at the Planetary Gear Unit differences:
