osso
Hi Guys, my supra should be docking at southampton in the next couple of days and already i am thinking about Mods. My supra has a standard stock exhaust, and i'd like to put a nice big bore exhaust on there but i've no idea which one! i remember going to JIC a few months ago and test drove a supra which had a tip size of at least 5" it was huge! and sounded great. Unfortunately i have absolutely no idea what exhaust it was.. but from pictures i've seen on the web it could've been the Apexi GT Spec exhaust. does anyone here have a apexi gt spec exhaust? Can anyone recommend a nice big bore exhaust? what is the recommended route when upgrading the exhaust on a jspec supra? I understand that you cannot fully decat a jspec supra, so how far would you go to upgrade the exhaust system? is it true you can remove the first cat, and replace it with a down pipe and keep the second cat? i've heard you could remove the second cat providing you get some restrictor rings? I've also heard that you can get a 2 piece down pipe which will allow you to install the cat back on with ease for the mot? why can you remove both cats on a uk spec supra and you cant on a jspec? what would happen if you did? What work would you have to do on a jspec so you could safely remove both cats? i know the fuel injectors are smaller on the jspec and the fact that the turbo uses ceramic blades. cheers James
Steve W2
James, You should do a search on the BBS as this question has come up loads of times and there are plenty of answers around for it. Gaz Walker of ENVY performance is doing a blinding deal on the Blitz Nur Spec R which is well worth having as it has a removeable baffle to make it sound lairy as you like (if you want it to). If you remove the cats on a Jpec the turbo pressure will rise depending on your car, to about 1.5 Bar! The restriction orifices allow you to reduce the turbo pressure to a sensible/safe limit of about 1.2 bar, which plenty of people on here run without problems. Your car will only pass the MOT if you have a least one cat in (doesnt matter which), however, if you have got a friendly MOT station it won't cause you any problems. All you will need to get is a simple turbo pressure gauge, again available from Envy that enables you to check that you are running the correct boost. Uk cars need a boost controller to achieve the same results, just as well you bought the superior J spec one! *runs for cover* www.envyperformance.com
osso
Hi steve, thx for the reply, im assuming from what you've said i could actually have a boost controller to release pressure if it goes over 1.2 bar? and that way i would be able to do without the restriction orifices? I gather this would be the more expensive option. does anyone run their supra more than 1.2 bar? or would you need more mods to safely run at a higher boost? I would have to see and hear the Blitz Nur Spec R exhaust before i'd get one installed, i guess i will have to come along to supra meet when the next one is in my area. Supraguy
Go to the top of the page, click Resources, then click Multimedia Studio. You will find some exhasts on there. I would say the Nur Spec R is the most popular and is claimed to be the best performance exhaust available for the Supra. The HKS Hiper is another popular one that is a bit louder and produces more of a "burble" sound. I have the Hiper myself and heard the Nur Spec. I wouldnt change it out for anything. As for your questions of running higher boost, I wouldnt really worry about it unless you do the full de-cat. If youre trying to question the cost of a Boost Controller, I will say its a hell of a lot cheaper than replacing blown turbos! Especially if youre running J-Spec ceramic bladed ones. There are a lot of people that use restrictor rings and never had problems. This would be your cheapest route... again, if you go full de-cat. Thorin
You can't lower the boost with a boost controller. Only raise it above what it is at naturally. Get a boost gauge (I'd recommend just a 52" one and stick it where the clock is) Get big exhaust (Hiper is nice but Blitz nur spec is certainly better quality) Get rid of both cats & fit restrictor ring (The slag of all mods ) :flame Dev No need for expensive boost controllers, they're for the lardy UK specs You don't really want to go any higher than 1.2bar on stock turbo's. Firstly the turbine blades would have a tendancy to shoot straight out of your now nicely decatted exhaust, and secondly you're about on the limit of the J-Spec's fueling anyway. Steve W
.....and secondly you're about on the limit of the J-Spec's fueling anyway. .......as I know to my cost ! ! ! 1.4/1.5 Bar for ~40/50 seconds = ~£1,500 > > > > STICK to ~1.2 Bar.... (until REALLY sorting Fuelling/Cooling etc.) .............I never had any problems at THAT ! ! FatS.
osso
wow, what a sight! looks like you really need forged pistons along with the intercooler and fueling sorted out! if you wanna run up to 1.5 boost safely! My first mod will definitely be a boost gauge, i have even got one in my mr2 gt turbo. i have been thinking about getting a 3 pod a pillar, and get a boost gauge, oil temp gauge, but im not sure what to put in the 3rd pod.. oil pressure, fuel pressure, exhaust temp maybe who knows. but oil temp and boost gauge will be pretty handy to have. Thorin
The stock pistons are fine, it's just the stock fueling and turbo's that aren't up to the job of running 1.5bar. Nothing some 550 injectors and some hybrids can't sort out though (well ok maybe one or two other bits and pieces) EGT (exhaust gas temp.) is always a useful one to have. Kevin Huntley
Thanks for all the kinds word Steve, I think I am going to have to put you on commision! I would most certainly go for a EGT Gauge the peak worn facility could save your engine when running close to the limit. As long as you take notice of the flashing leds and buzzers! In terms of Exhausts the Blitz Nur Spec R exhaust is the best value for money exhaust available at any price. Although if your willing to part with the money there are better designed and constructed exhausts that release more power. The powerhouse Amuse range and Veilside TI spring to mind! osso
From what i've heard about removing the cat on jspec supra's a EGT Gauge would be very handy indeed. it would certainly warn people if you are running too lean before you start melting those pistons!
