Rear Drivetrain Clunk!

400BHP

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a clunk when i either go from reverse to forwards or from a standstill, to forwards, but its more noticeable when going from reverse to drive, could this be the backlash on the diff or the donut on its way out?

Anyone else heard this noice from theirs? Its not the brake pads BTW, this I know for defi....

yep - irregardless of hot or cold. it sort of clunks when you reverse then hit the brake. if you are reversing, it makes no noise but the noise comes when you hit the brake. strange

btw - chris, sorry to sorta hijack the thread mate :)

Got a similar problem myself, only mines on a manual box. Very 'clunky' when I engage first gear. Seems to make a 'ker-chunk!' kind of noise, also happens putting it in 3rd and 5th when at idle. Ive checked gearbox oil and that seems ok, just abit worried now that it may something more expensive!!

finally had this looked at. went down to a garage near the house to get their opinion and it seems that it's supposedly my rear brake discs - evidently something is out of kilter there. calipers maybe ? i've got it booked in on tuesday for them to have a look at properly ...

Is it when you engage a gear or when you pull away?

Different car I know but I had a loud knock on my ST185 GT-four. Everytime I'd change the direction of travel (ie forward to reverse/reverse to forward) I'd get a loud clunk.

It was a CV joint that had knackered itself.

If that's not the symptoms then it's probably something else. I'm no mechanic anyway.

The gear boxes in supes are very 'agricultural' in that they are very strong and well built, and can easily take up to 500bhp, BUT with that comes a lack of finesse and quiet changes, unlike a fiesta box which is made to be quiet but not too strong. It is normal to get a clunk as you put it into gear - every supe I have ever been in does it. Also when you turn the engine off every now and again you will get a shudder noise from the box -- again had it in every car I have owned and in mates supes too, new and old but only ever heard manual.
