hadyn
Tonight whilst slowing down at about 20ish mph I accidently put my autobox into N then R for about 2 seconds(i thought i was driving my pug manual diesel estate:more: )the car seemed to 'bump' to a stop, I then quickly engaged D and everything was back to normal. Car seems to drive fine, shifts fine, no noises etc. Could I have caused any damage by doing this?

hadyn
Isnt it electronically controlled to stop damage anyway? I,e, it sensed it was going into reverse when moving and just shut everything off?

I,e, it sensed it was going into reverse when moving and just shut everything off? I don't know. I think you were just luky. The box is electronically controlled, and for example won't shift down until revs allow, but I *almost* had exactly the same incident as you, and I heard the gears grind but I didn't actually get it all the way into R. I think you, like me, have been quite lucky.
hadyn
If any damage had been done, it would be whining like a bar steward or not shifting wouldnt it?
UltraFlynn
You can always shift from D into N without pushing the button. The button just stops you from going into R. I've done this also and in my car the revs very quickly zoomed towards the red-line and I at once eased off until I was doing about the right revs again and then I engaged D again. This was done totally by accident and I'm trying never to do it again. (At this done between 20 & 30 mph) - I got absolutely no nasty noises from the autobox during any of this. hadyn
Flynn you've nearly redlined it with the box in R whilst rolling forward???? I heard my reverse warning buzzer for about half a second
Pete
I always wondered what would happen if you did that.

Chris Wilson
If you haven't done any damage say a prayer, or thank Aisin-Warner for making a bullet proof gearbox, and don't do it again. Only a cat has nine lives
UltraFlynn
Flynn you've nearly redlined it with the box in R whilst rolling forward???? I heard my reverse warning buzzer for about half a second Nope. I nearly redlined it in NEUTRAL whilst rolling forward. To get into reverse I would have had to push the big shift button in and I'm not that stupid. What happened was that I was going round a roundabout in 2nd and wanted to put the car back in D. I clicked one notch too many and ended up in Neutral.
UltraFlynn
I presume you're talking about shifting into N whilst driving though? Yup. Exactly. I would dread to think what would happen if you got the gearbox into Reverse and then left it there long enough for the gearbox to actually engage the gear. I would hope that the electronics would assume you'd done it by accident and not engage the gear. CW is right though. Count the number of lives you've got left and don't do it again. Best thing to do is to learn exactly when you need to use the shift button because if you only use it when you have to you reduce the risk of shifting into Reverse when moving between 2nd and Drive. As far as I know (from the owner handbook) you need to depress the lock release button for the following changes: - shifting into and out of P shifting into R shifting into L
lpher
There must be some safety feature there? For instance of the same typer as the one that doesnt allow you to shift into a lower gear...if it would result in the engine getting over the redline? (it then shifts down automatically when the revs are right for a gearchange )
