how many lives does my cat have?!!

It's a .22 Long Rifle round. Edit - and yes, it's a live one. I think it's Eley brand judging by the stamp on the case. Weedy in the gun world but dangerous in the real world ;) It's Rimfire class round, and it's called rimfire because the sticky-outy rim at the back of it contains the primer compound, unlike centrefire ammo (9mm, .357mag etc etc) where the centre primer cap (silver dot in the middle of the brass casing) contains the primer compound.

A rimfire gun's firing pin crushes a bit of the casing's rim to set off the primer charge (explosive) which in turn ignites the powder charge (fast burning nitro propellant - *not* an explosive). Your cat hasn't chewed the rim area so it wouldn't have gone off no matter how much damage it did to the rest of the round. However, it's gotten through the copper jacket by the look of it and might have ingested some lead so watch your kitty's health.

I'd advise not trying to set it off. The casing would split as it's not supported by a gun breech and you will potentially get shrapnel from it in all manner of directions. When fired from a gun that tiny bullet is in fact lethal to over 1.5 kilometers - it won't go that far when fired outside of a gun but it'll go far enough to reach you or some other poor sod and it could kill you, end of story.

Take it to a police station for safe disposal - ask for the firearms officer and explain the situation. You won't get in trouble as you are obviously doing the right thing and your cat has quite obviously chewed the living shit out of it :D They are quite durable and would take a directed hammer blow to set off so carrying it in your pocket wrapped up in a load of tissue is quite safe.

BTW they smell luvverly when fired, mmmmm .22.....

PS if it's any help your air rifle idea wouldn't have worked anyway :)

yeh charming!

I'm looking forward to Nevada again this year. Last summer I spent waaay to much on ammo and automatic weapons rental.

The buzz you get firing a proper gun is quite addictive, you can see why there's such a gun problem in the States.

I shot an M16, AK47, M249 and a weedy Glock thing, which was okay but no bollox to it (plus I couldnt aim it properly!)

Want to do the D'Eagle this time round, the guys at that range all liked old Colts though - any other recommendations Ian? :-)

I can't believe a cat managed to do that much damage to the casing - I used to do some shooting, and I know the spent brass is pretty soft, but that's ridiculous! It probably got jammed in the breach and bent that way, then the shooter just chucked it, since it's a hassle to dispose of properly. Very irresponsible.
