Strange starting problem + rough idle

Hi guys,

Well I've had this problem for a few months now, the symptoms are as follows:

1. Sometimes the car doesn't start when I turn the ignition - it turns over, almost sounds like it's turning over faster than normal but fails to catch. If I turn the key back and then try again it will always start the second time. Doesn't seem to be linked with being hot or cold...

2. When starting from cold, after the revs have dropped to around 750rpm the car will idle a little rough, the revs will fluctuate very slightly going up and down.... after a fair bit of driving this always goes away.

I've had the car fully serviced (all fluids), new IK22 plugs, a brand new battery, but these problems still persist - any ideas? Coil packs have been suggested, but are these symptoms typical? Any other ideas? Could the alarm be causing problem 1? (the car has both the standard Toyota alarm and a Clifford 300).

All that aside, the car seems to be runing better than ever....the second turbo didn't seem to be pulling quite as it should, but tightening some of the jubilee clamps soon fixed that :)

Regards,

Francis

Idle control valve getting stuck?

Fuel filter gummed up?

Lack of fuel pressure?

Could be along those lines (the ignition system should be ok if it's running ok)

I'd go for the idle control first - give it a clean....oh and reset the ECU too.

Cheers guys...

The fuel filter's changed regularly, and at the last service so it's not that. The MAF is the thing that fits on to the air intake right, just before the airbox? If so I've got a spare UK one with 40k miles on it so will swap that over.

On the topic of fuel pumps, is it worth swapping mine for a new one as it's done 106k miles? Should I go for Walbro or Toyota standard? Obviously I need something that's going to be able to match the UK stock setup.

Will clean up the idle control valve and reset the ECU, many thanks!

Regards,

Francis

Number one sounds like your imobilizer to me mate. as far as i know it cuts the fuel which would explain why the car seems to turn quicker! Good luck!

Why would having no fuel injected make it turn over faster on the starter motor?
