Chris Wilson
I believe you can have an outgoing text facility turned off by your service provider, but can any provider (I am with Orange) be instructed to turn off receipt of text messages? Thanks.
Pete
I think so. There's only one sure fire way to find out though!
Mike
It's a free call and their open 24/7 150 from your handset... They can do it.... but I've a feeling there is some 'business' reason they may not want to.. I used to work for them...
Chris Wilson
Orange say they can't stop text messaging *INCOMING*, only outgoing, they claim no provider can do this as they use text to issue SIM updates, whatever that may mean. For some reason I felt i wasn't perhaps getting the truth, but I may be wrong... Cheers.
Pete
Hmmm. Smells like BS to me. After all.. it's in their interest for people to be able to send you messages!
Chris Wilson
I hate the damned things, I think I have (tried) to reply to 2 in my life. I don't bother now, I just delete them. I am getting some damned auction company sending me news of their latest auction in the middle of the night, by text. Interrupts drinking time, has to be stopped! Pete
They fill up your phone memory too. Have you registered with the telephone preference service website? All UK phone marketing companies must adhere to this by law. The problem is those pesky foreigners. Your phone will have the option to have no alert on message receipt too. SIM updates are software packets to update your phone to allow it to receive new services, or to modify the services your phone currently is set up for or to change your telephone number etc. As a qiuick fix I would suggest turning off the text alert or having it silent, however I am not sure of a way to get rid of junk texts - they are just a fact of mobile life fortunately I dont get many at all. Supragal
I suspect that could well be true. Originally that was the intention of sms - used for updates etc, then, unexpectedly everyone went nuts of it, so they cashed in. If you can't get incomming ones then you won't get updates for your phone. As you know you can turn off outgoing, ie block yourself. I know someone that did this because he'd get drunk and really upset people by sending them ridiculous texts. Muppet.
Chris Wilson
What's this telephone preference website, Pete? I'll have a go with that. I didn't even realize call alert for text was optionally switchable on / off. I assume it's a seperate alert to a normal incoming voice call then? Thanks terawua! I'll delve into the phone instruction book, wherever that got put... Cheers.

I will dig it out and give you their contact details Chris. On second thoughts.. no I wont as Lee just beat me to it! in the meantime.. its a shame they dont have this over here.... http://www.telezapper.com/tour2.htm it decimated telesales in the USA overnight (god I wish I had invented that!) So can these software updates be applied by anyone sending a suitable packets? Sounds dodgy to me! I ask because I am no longer with Vodafone, but they sent me a text message saying that they had updated my SIM...b@stards keep sending me stuff too - get the message: "I DON'T WANT VODAFONE ANY MORE!!! LEAVE ME ALONE!"
terawua
I dont know for sure but they would probably need your phones IMEI number to update it... and only your network and yourself should know that.

I'm not 100%, but I think you can certainly have some fun with them. Back in my uni days I was registered with a site which would allow you to send SMS, but not only did it allow you to control the header (ie you could make it look like it came from anyone) but it would also allow you to send raw HEX messages, the type used to control the phone. Pete
They don't stop texts though do they? Should stop any communication to that phone number device. Wait until we're all on VoIP. They're already worked out a way to send global voice spam messages.

They're already worked out a way to send global voice spam messages. I still get texts and calls (your going to the end of your contract etc.) but they don't use the phone book (or any kind of law as I can tell?) they just randomly generate numbers and call them.... I guess most companies will use the same database table for calls and texts telephone number, so I think thats why texts tend to stop too
