Scoboblio
On the way into the train station tonight my newly acquired daily runner (1989 SOHC Cavalier SRI) started overheating (water temp gauge went up to about 105 degrees). When I stopped there was a small amount of steam coming out of a hose in the engine bay, which appears to have either split or popped off slightly and is now leaking. Would a split hose like this cause the overheating? Spoken to the previous owner and he recently replaced the rad cap which failed a week or so ago, if he's got the wrong one (ie the pressure is too high), could this have caused the hose to die? Please help guys, or I'm stranded at the train station at 9am tomorrow waiting for the RAC man
supRo
If there's obvious coolant leekage then it is more than like that is the cause of the overheating!
Scoboblio
Thanks, the pipe has obviously got to be replaced, but is it possible (or common) for an incorrectly pressured rad cap to cause a hose to pop off?
Robert
well i was told another reason for coolant hoses poping off is the thermostat. When i changed my one of my old supra it stopped the leaks and stopped the backpressure on the cooling system.
Scoboblio
Thanks guys, a couple of things to look at then. Time to ask the RAC to meet me at the station in the morning I think Hell I'm paying them, might as well use them!
JohnA
Thanks, the pipe has obviously got to be replaced, but is it possible (or common) for an incorrectly pressured rad cap to cause a hose to pop off? Yes ofcourse, if the radcap is stuck and doesn't release pressure at 1 or 1.1bar (whatever it's supposed to be) then pressure will increase beyond that and something will pop. Usually the weakest hose.
letmeshowyou
I bet I can guess which hose it is thats split ps. if you ever get stuck at the station gimme a call (it isnt far from me after all lol)
Scoboblio
if you ever get stuck at the station gimme a call (it isnt far from me after all lol) Thanks dude The split hose has been replaced and everything seems peachy.... but will still look at the rating / condition of the rad cap. JohnA
Is it 'uprated'? Some caps allow higher pressures in the coolant system, in the misguided belief that an old, tired system will be rejuvinated by *more* pressure. Then something falls off, lol... Need4Speed
but is it possible (or common) for an incorrectly pressured rad cap to cause a hose to pop off?Only if the car is running too hot to start with.
