wheel bearings god dammit!

will a wheel bearing on the rear of a Supra necessarily make the usual associated noise when it's on it's way out?

i can't think of anything else it might be. had everything else checked over completely by two seperate mechanics and the suspension, bushes and prop are all fine!!

About £300 for the bearing kit and the labour. You can tell if a bearing is shagged by jacking up the wheel and waggling it top and bottom (handbrake off ;) ) any movement - replace bearings time.

I got mine done by Mark Kindell at Kindell Motors in Aylesbury - he's got the press to get the old bearing out and he's a good chap.

my car did have 18s on when i bought it and more than likely the wrong offset too.

everything else has been checked over but i'm getting no noise whatsoever but there is a vibration/shimmy at the rear of the car.

Chris, i think you looked at Smarty's car when you put your suspension on it and you said it was his wheel bearing/s? iirc he got them done and it's sorted now.

edited: as it's the rear bearing I have in stock, not the front as previously stated.

Is it the front or rear wheel bearing? If it's the rear one I have one in stock that I can supply, including delivery to your door for £84.

If it is a front bearing you need, the price would be £49, but I would need to order.

check your brake discs and pads aren't over-worn before ordering a new bearing!

Poor Carlos learnt this lesson the hard way... dude did you manage to sell that bearing then?

Supra-man, I had my OS Rear bearing and 'half shaft' (someone wanna tell me what this is? :haha:) changed just before Christmas. This cost me £360 in total, allowing 3 hours in labour charges.

My symptoms consisted of an intermittent squeak-squawk... that was really bad sometimes and completely silent occassionally. This apparently, is due to the bearing shifiting back into position momentarily. And in a tight reverse-round-a-corner manouvre, it had a loud creak.

Had it jacked up, handbrake off, and hey presto I had a VERY dodgy movement. Try this yourself.

The repair even rectified the 'clunk' in gear change in my autobox! Chris... it's been bugging me, would you know what this is?

Hope you get it sorted without too much pain dude.

wouldn't mind knowing what that 'half-shaft' business is all about though....

Might be wrong but I think 'half shaft' equals 'drive shaft'. Although a whole wheel bearing and drive shaft for £360 odd quid sounds quite cheap.

Nic, When I've decided about bushes I might have to add a rear wheel bearing to the list too!

  • 2 months later...

I've got the "wa wa wa wa" wheel-bearing-on-the-way-out noise, which I think is coming from the rear passenger side.

I've jacked the rear of the car up (both rear wheels off the ground) and checked for top/bottom and side/side play...there is none.

I've noticed that I cannot freely spin either rear wheel forward to see if the sound appears (though I can roll the car forward easily enough when the wheels are on the floor)...would I be correct in assuming this is due to the car having a LSD?

Since there is no play and I cannot spin the wheels forward, is there anything else I can check to confirm/rule out a worn wheel bearing?
