that was what i was hoping you wouldnt say!!, the reason for this is that is was over full and i was told i should probably drain some out, just been reading on previous gearbox threads that if over full it will dump the excess itself, so is it safe just to wang the lub i took out back in?

Type iV ATF from toyota ONLY is what you need. anything else will cause damage. Drain out from the plug hole. refill with around 2 litres of fresh stuff. Got part number if you want it. not expensive so do it the right way!

 

Is it that easy??? Just send 2 litres down the dipstick tube via a funnel?

Draining the box and refilling it only replaces about a third of the fluid. You are meant to do some other work to completely empty it out of the torque converter but from what I remember dude saying its a bit of a pita. Anyone that replaces the oil in the drain and fill manner will notice an immediatte improvement in the box and is in itself worth doing. Drive 1000 miles and do it again for a better effect.

 

I can tell you what happens if you over fill it. When you go over 130 the excess oil froths up and blows out the breather which then drips straight onto the exhaust pipes below it. The result of this is very large very scary clouds of smoke out the back of the car. I know this as thats what the problem was with Roys motor when I bought it. The inimitable chris wilson diagnosed that one for me.

No it wont.......its what peoples perceptions are of this fluid debate that lead you to believe this.....until its proven that it damages the box I will always have different views

 

Type IV is the logical choice but there are other alternatives

i use the opposite logic, until it's proven that another oil is perfect for the job then i will assume that the type t-iv is the stuff to use and that anything else has potential for damage. it's not as if you are pouring gallons of the stuff in every week to make reasonable economic sense to use something cheaper.

no, get an accurate reading (see previous threads) and put the correct amount in.

Thats a very valid point, in my experience, I have never had a box fail or any problems for that matter using other big name brand fluids, Dextron II/III has worked fine for me for years now and I believe it contains the anti shear elements required, and I still get super smooth changes all year round, but your point is correct I should really use your logic here

Why risk it???? USE only the TOYOTA stuff. You do not need to change all the oil in the box. only two litres. the new stuff will regenerate the old stuff. This is how it works. If you change it all then shearing can occur. DO WHAT THE MANUALS SAY!!!!!

 

Toyota know these auto boxes and this is what they recommend. My box (touch wood) has over 160000 miles on it and has this service done each time- at the right interval 38000miles , and its silky and never given any trouble at all.

Come on guys why risk it!! even if there is no hard evidence that it damages the boxes, for the sake of £20 is it worth it?. I remember reading that someone had problems becoz of the wrong fluid. I will stick to TYPE IV. this is what is recomended by C WILSON and others who know these boxes. TOYOTA TECH also recomend this fluid. T TECH have had customers with boxes that have failed becoz of wrong fliud ( give them a call)

The failure can be a number of things though not just down to fluids (powerbraking, not letting the box warm up properly etc).....I have had discussions with other technical members on here and also Chris Wilson on this topic and both said what I am using will be fine....however Chris did say he Always without fail uses Toyota IV in his customers cars.

I have left mine in there because it was fully flushed and filled with dextron before I had the car so I have kept it the same to be honest I dont want to start mixing them as this will cause issues!

As I said, in time I will get the whole lot flushed out, TC and all and change over but not until the stuff in there starts to contaminate and it needs doing
