Getrag box fluids query

Scooter

Recommended Posts

I've been looking through my new cars previous service invoice (by Toyota) and found that the gearbox fluid and the coolant were changed approx 7,000 miles ago.

The gearbox fluid used per the invoice was 'Shell Donax TX'

I've searched for this oil and came up with the following blurb from shell's site

"Shell MTX Fluid

Shell MTX Fluid is a fully formulated synchromesh transmission fluid (STF) for use in manual transaxle/transmissions. It offers excellent synchronizer performance, oxidation stability, yellow metal compatibility, and low temperature performance. This product will satisfactorily lubricate manual transaxles/manual transmission from –40°F to +300°F."

I'm pretty sure that there is a specific toyota fluid for the Getrag Box and i've heard that some other fluids have caused problems in the states re the seals in the box.

Does anyone know the changing period time or mileage for the trans fluid and if this Shell stuff is ok to leave in until it'll be due?

I think the schedule is change every 36,000 miles. As you say though you're only supposed to use Toyota V160 gearbox oil. Maybe the Shell stuff is OK, but I'd want to change it as soon as possible just in case. You'll need two tins of the oil, can't find the part number now, but it's pretty expensive!

It's not too bad to change yourself, as long as you get some kind of pump to pump the new oil in. Otherwise you'd have to rig something up with hoses and funnels and stuff. I bought a crappy little pump from my local motorists shop for a tenner.

Thanks Simon, it all DOES apply as i've got the 6 speed V161 box fitted to the later NA's

I'll look into the feasability of doing this myself, sounds just like an oil change but with the complication of not just being able to pour in the new fluid.

Cheers

Oh right, yeah, I knew that all the time see.:music: I changed mine a while ago. You need to jack the front passenger side up onto an axle stand so you can crawl underneath. On the gearbox there is a drain plug underneath and a fill plug on the passenger side. You'll need a ring spanner with a decent offset to get at the fill plug. Make sure you undo the fill one first, that way if you can't get the drain one off for any reason you're not totally buggered. Then undo the drain plug and be prepared for oil to go absolutely everywhere! Then you just bung the drain one back in and stick the pipe from your pump thingy in the fill and fill it up until it overflows. It takes just short of two litres.

The fill plug on mine was done up bloody tight. I ended up jacking the end of the spanner up (from a safe distance) ! :)
