Rear suspension knock, Any idea's?

I know this is going to be nearly impossible to resolve online but just wondered if anyone on here has had a similar problem. The other day i was driving along minding my own business when ....... BANG, uncovered manhole in the road caught my back wheel. I didn't notice anything wrong immediatley, still drove alright, no wobbling at higher speeds nothing. The next day me & the missus went out and when i hit a bump in the road it sounded like the car bottomed out on the same wheel i had hit the day previous. Pulled over had a look couldn't see anything obvious so carried on, hit another patch of bumpy road and i can her the bang again. I took the car round to my mates and put it up on his ramp and we had the wheel off and had a good look around the underside of the wheel. Everything seems to be in place nothing looks like it has slipped off or broken or bent, put the wheel back on but i still get the same problem. I think it is slowly getting worse too or i am being my usual paranoid self. Too sum it up, it is as if the spring has lost it's elasticity or something and is allowing the car to bottom out. The noise itself sounds like a dead bang, metal against metal, deep sort of noise.

I'm open to sugestions peeps, i can't think of anything else.

Thanks for reading. :blahblah:

Ben.

Does the car still sit square, completly different car I know but my old mrk 2 astra snapped a section of the spring off?? did you look at the top and bottom of the spring (this may well not happen on a car like this, it's just a thought really) or rear wishbone bushes? Mine went last year?

The car still sits fine, i don't really know what i'm looking for either but my friend is a pretty competant mechanic so he knew what he was looking at and he thought originally that it was the top plate thing that the spring sits in but he said that they look fine too but the noise is getting worse. Would a broken shock absorber do this?

No the noise isn't rotational, it is just a dead thud. when i had it up on the ramp there was some fluid around the bottom of the sping and on the arm that runs underneath it. If this is the damper, can someone tell me what that is, if possible what it looks like and how much?

Thanks.

Ben if you have fluid in that area it sounds like your damper is leaking. If it is you will get a springy ride and could be bottoming/topping out the springs, which could be causing the noise. You should really get the car looked at by an expert, as this could be dangerous if you do have a knackered damper.

I can supply replacemnet Bilstein dampers, these were fitted as a performance option by Toyota on early model Supras and as standard on some often later models. They are one of the best dampers you can fit on the Supra and I have supplied a lot of these to members, as I can get them for very good prices. Only draw back is that they would take a few weeks to get to you, so perhaps in the meantime you could source a spare damper from a member to make do until you can fit a new set, if this is the problem.

As a guide I can get a set of Bilstein dampers delivered to your door for less than £400. Contact me either in my section HERE or by pm for full details.

If it turns out to be a problem with another suspension part, let me know, as I can also give you prices/part numbers for any other parts required.

Here are pics of the Bilstein dampers and complete set of front and rear suspension components, that I recently supplied to a member.

Thanks for the info nic, unfortunately i can't wait that long if it's something that needs doing urgently cause it's my 1 and only car. The ride doesn't seem to be any worse but i don't really drive fast or eraticly at all (bit of a wimp in my baby) so maybe i wouldn't notice as much. Will take your advice and get it looked at by a mechanic though. Cheers mate.

Broardside: will let you know if this gets rid of the problem but mine gets worse if i have a pasenger so maybe something different.
