Pete
Interesting. Are there cylinder heads where you have to take the cams out first? I thought they all pretty much just dropped on and off assembled. There are engine repair manuals available for download if you are a full member. It can happen if you have very steep valve angles. Its not desirable in a production engine as the heads are sometimes sub-assembled and then bolted onto the short block. I would assume that on the 2JZ you don't have to take the cams out, but you never know...
JohnA
The calibra turbo engine didn't need the cams to come out for the head to come off. It's usually good practice to take them off anyway though, because you'd want to lap the valves etc once the head is off.

bedlam
Well unless the 2jz is way diff to the 1jz head.. i dont see how yer gonna fit a spline down pass the cams to get onto the head bolts...and i know it cant be that diff since i can bolt a 1jz head right onto a 2jz block. paul mac
i took mine out in situ as i was fitting ARP head studs, i may be wrong but i could'nt see how you could get a socket on the ARP's nut with the cam in, are you fitting the original bolts back in ? veilsideTT
Done it twice now. Cams out im affraid. you cant get to all of the headbolts with them inplace. Well....you can, but at silly angles and you would probably f**k the bolts up. Scott

Oh yeh, And those stock turbo nuts There the main reason i went single if im honest!! i just didnt EVER want anything to do with them nuts again! EVER! EVER EVER! veilsideTT
First time was with engine out as i was putting in a new short block, yeh your right it was a piece of piss with it out. Second time i was only doing a head gasket and i had the pleasure of my knuckles meeting "those f**cking turbo nuts" You know, i think it may be "quicker" to take the engine out to just remove the head.....seriously! (if you have the crane of course) Pull the loom through the firewall & dump it on the top of the engine. Fan and rad out, 2 big mounting bolts, take the box too (remove prop & mount), fuel lines, few wires and connectors, zorst. Bobs your uncle....fanny is your aunt! Jake
So what about the Aircon? unbolt the AC pump from the engine and leave it laying in the engine bay. Don't undo the hoses.
paul mac
Ditto. i found a 5 litre tin of emulsion just the right height to use as a step to get in untill it collapsed, all i can say is its a good job it was'nt full (tip-dont use a 5 litre tin of emulsion as a step)

veilsideTT
ditto, Left AC pump and PS pump connected to lines and in engine bay. They get in the way a bit when pulling the engine but better than disconnecting lines and re gassing AC.
