Removing cylinder head

Interesting. Are there cylinder heads where you have to take the cams out first? I thought they all pretty much just dropped on and off assembled.

There are engine repair manuals available for download if you are a full member.

I've seen heads with the cams over the head bolts. It can happen if you have very steep valve angles. Its not desirable in a production engine as the heads are sometimes sub-assembled and then bolted onto the short block.

I would assume that on the 2JZ you don't have to take the cams out, but you never know...

The worst part about removing the head is having to lean over the engine bay for so long.

My back hurt sooooo much after!

Oh yeh, And those stock turbo nuts :complain:

There the main reason i went single if im honest!! i just didnt EVER want anything to do with them nuts again! EVER! EVER EVER!

First time was with engine out as i was putting in a new short block, yeh your right it was a piece of piss with it out.

Second time i was only doing a head gasket and i had the pleasure of my knuckles meeting "those f**cking turbo nuts"

You know, i think it may be "quicker" to take the engine out to just remove the head.....seriously! (if you have the crane of course)

Pull the loom through the firewall & dump it on the top of the engine. Fan and rad out, 2 big mounting bolts, take the box too (remove prop & mount), fuel lines, few wires and connectors, zorst.

Bobs your uncle....fanny is your aunt!

The only pain I found is the AC and the POwer steering. Any tricks there anyone know?
I left them both in the engine bay when I pulled my engine and gearbox out.

edit:

Sorry I was think of Altenator and AC. Yeah the PAS pump made a mess when disconnected.

i had the rad out of mine and just "climbed" in the engine bay its surprising how much room there is, it made the job so much easier
