Supragal
Ok, so the beasts been sat on axel stands for the last 5 months- not been moved/started or anything from what I understand. What are the implications of this and whats the best way to play it from here?
Alex
Injectors could be fouled. Make sure your first start up has some Toluene in it....this will clean them - and don't use full throttle for at least 1-2 tank fulls (annoying but necessary - unless you like replacing your engine) How have tyres been stored? Did you take them off the car? is the battery fully charged - has it been on trickle chage/disconnected from the car whilst up on axle stands? etc etc
Supragal
Tyres are not an issue- half the reason the car hasn't moved is that it doesn't have any wheels... so they'll be new if I EVER get sent the alloys. As far as I know it's literally just been left, very much doubt the battery has been disconnected- is there any point in doing anything about it at this late stage?? Should I ask them to start it up and let it run or wait until it's done or at least has wheels so can be moved?
Alex
The battery should be checked with a multi metre first.... I would disconnect it now. That was the first time the engine fires up it will be in learn mode, it will hunt for an idle clear old fault codes and start a fresh. If the oil wasn't changed when it went into storage then it should be change. Re-freshing fluids is never a bad idea....check the condition of the coolant too. If you live in a hard water area and have ever topped the coolant up with tap water scale could be building up and your radiator could be buggered. joy....lots of things to take into consideration... But it will probably be fine.
Supragal
It was serviced just before it went in, next due one is in about 8k I think- and thats a cam belt change too, so I have no idea what kind of water it has in it lol. Will ring them and get them to disconnect it then. Cheers Anyone know if theres a legal obligation here- i.e. I leave my car with a garage, they take 4 months longer than quoted to do the work and the car is sat idle resulting in engine damage? Do they have any obligation to look after a car thats in their care so to speak?
Darren
Why are they taking so long? Sometimes you have to make a fuss to get the job moving!!!
Supragal
I really couldn't MAKE more of a fuss TBH. Just rang them and they've ACTUALLY started the other side now- woo hoo! Was gonna post a pic of the current state but I'm on the mac and don't have any on here. In fairness they've had a nightmare with staff not being there and stuff but it's kinda not really my problem. My mates the editor of TSC mag and he gave them a really hard time at donny south apparently, seems to have helped...
Darren
Sounds good news that they have started again..Keep em at it!
Suprash
Supragal, can I ask what the car is in ......??? And I cant believe any garage would take this long. If they had my car, and for some strange reason it ended up on axle jacks without any wheels, and then left for months, I would be down there with truck, spare set of wheels, and Dude as back up, he's not the prettiest thing thats ever graced our lump of earth . I just cant get my head round whats going on here, someone explain this......(thats going to be my catch phrase soon...)
dude
Personally i would get them to charge the battery and stick some fresh optimax in the tank , hopefully the rad either has anti-freeze or 4life in it , fire the car up and let it idle a while , dont worry unduly im sure loads of these get parked up for winter and hardly ever started , as an aside you could take Ash with you and use him as a feather duster cause he's all fluffy in J Timberlake sort of way :p John:flame Dev
Supragal
Ash- The car is in a building on an industrial estate...I'm pretty sure you mean which garage? If so I don't think it's fair to say until it's finished as I've seen their work and it's good they're just pants at getting stuff done on time...obviously So they're getting an unfair press if I do...I hope... Basically it's having a custom one off kit built from scratch, I didn't like the wheels it had on it so I said I was gonna sell them- as it happens the guys doing the work both own 300's so the wheels fit and one of the cars is grey with a gold pearl so the gold wheels looked great so I sold them to him, hense having no wheels- getting new ones wasn't meant to take this long but I've blagged a free set and trying to find out what styles they have that are in the size I want etc etc is actually a total nightmare and at some point I have to talk them into actually sending them out... but thats a job for monday. Basically they've had a nightmare with staff etc so my cars been started then put on hold. Apparently both sides have been D/A'd down now and the sides and rear quarters are well under way but they can't fibreglass it until the wheels are there as the arches need to be built around them *sigh*. Pretty sure it has anti-freeze in it- unless JIC didnt bother... but I might go over this week so I can check then and remedy if necessary. I'll start it up too if you reckon it's worth it- although I'm scared now! I'll take Dude and Ash as back up if you like but you two should learn to play nicely
Terminator
This may not apply to the MKIV, but I had one of my cars off the road since Feb, I think I did most of the right things while it was off the road. It has a 2.9 Cosworth engine, which I just managed to repair a week or so ago. MOT on Friday and a 500 mile round trip yesterday. The first 40 miles were fine then a miss fire then another cylinder drop out at cruising speed so we limped home on intermittent 4 - 6 cylinders. A quick look at the plugs revealed the problem. The at least two of plugs were slightly corroded at the lead contact points. I had a spare set in the garage so replaced the lot and cleaned up all the contact. Perfect a quick test and I had confidence to tackle the 500 mile round trip. It may be worth checking the plug contacts. As with the MKIK my cossie plugs were buried deep in the engine and it did not occur to me that they could have suffered corrosion due to moisture ingress. The vibration of the fist 40 or so miles made the initial good contact shift and I could only get a spark when the ECU was in WOT mode, and driving at 150 was not an option in Saturday morning traffic.. dude
I'll take Dude and Ash as back up if you like but you two should learn to play nicely Im not playing with Ash in any sort of way:p , we can take him to hold the coats if need be or we could let him drive around the workshop that should cause enough havoc to have the desired effect, anyway Ash i thought i was kinda pretty, not in an efiminate way (you) but you know what i mean:thumbs: John:flame Dev
Supragal
OK...check battery, check anti-freeze, check plugs, beat garage staff with a big stick... is that all? lol Seriously, cheers guys, this all suddenly occured to me when I got back from hols and my current temporary heap wouldn't start after only a week.
