J spec plates...?

Apparently it's legal to have smaller than UK spec number plates on an import- check it out link below:

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/r...equirements.htm

section 5

Fair enough there are 2 'conditions' but it's not difficult to arrange the number plate mount is it? Tee hee.

BUT do you reckon the "conditions" would mean that it only applies to, say supras after 96 when they ceased production here?? What are peoples thoughts? Anyone know conclusively??

Hopefully this'll be good news to some people!

HELLO S-GAL M8,

the ol´bill r unpredictable.. depending on who is the driver in da soop, it is as simple as that.

Now, another way of getting around the problem is get a sad plate made up in the shop that the sad F**kaz will accept and call it legal.

Always keep that set in the back of the car coz when they threaten to take yer car away (which they could do) u could say :

HERE IS ONE I MADE EARLIER now sod off..

u need to put that up n problem solved.

I am in the same situation as u .. Although mine is the latest Jap model and the accept the funny sizes but like i said it all depends on the copper is n who is driving the car ...

Reality ...

Supragal I havent read the link but my rear plate has motorcycle letters and IS legal , if it had 3" letters it would be ILLEGAL (not enough surround) the plate is BS stamped and is special import size , Like Rokka says depends on the copper BUT if they think you know what you are talking about they tread very carefully , i had a copper try to confiscate my illegal visor once , i refused to remove it from the (£500) helmet and told him to be carefull not to damage anything, he thought about confiscating the whole helmet untill i mentioned this must be theft as the helmet was legal (his partner thought the same ) so i got a dont let me see you in that again and kept my £60 visor, ive also asked them to sign tyres they say are illegal so there will be no dispute when we go to court etc and they normally say why are you so sure thats not illegal (cockily) the answer to which is 'im an MOT tester and prob. look at a few more tyres than you, This doesnt work if the canvas is showing.

Yeah, but I'm thinking keep a copy of the above info in the car as well as the standard plates.... The real issue is that I wanted to have the kit built up to house the exact size of whatever plates I go for (unless I do a Wolf and just not bother with number plates lol) so UK plates wouldn't fit on there if I did get pulled over...

Has anyone seen that info before or know any law that can interperate what it actually means??

Your better off with no plate on the front and a 'it just fell off officer' £20 fine , illegal plate is soon to be hanging offence i hear.

This one is taking the piss but i like it

Just run without plates. Max penalty £30 (may be for each plate) no points, no comeback, no hassles.

Yep, or just put proper showplates on with "Supra" on or whatever. Its less illegal than p1ssing about with your normal plate!

Gaz.

I suppose what I'm getting at though is if j spec supras qualify for that exception in the above link- therefore small plates would be legal. I just don't understand what:

"The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval"

actually means.....????

I reckon the police have got bigger things to worry about than the size of the letters on your reg plate. I can't see anyone getting stopped as long as the plate is readable, or unless it's just an excuse to stop you so they can deal with something else.

My car has a 12" plate at the front. I wheelspan across a wet junction in front of a cop car (didn't see him, honest!) and didn't get stopped.

It's going in for an MOT next week, so I'll just stick a full size plate on top of the small one. Job done :)

James.

An assiciate had his MKIV MOTed recently, it is alleged that he forgot to put his large plate over his small font personalised plate. The MOT tester laughed at the plate called his mate over and said, " Hey look at that plate". It is my understanding that the car passed on the said small plate.

heres my small front jap plate. the standard one with over hang looked rubbish. got told as long as plate is same sise as plate holder its ok. its the rear plate thats important.

my front plate is not piss taking small but just right i think. its one of my fave mods. and been past loads of police and not been pulled for it. so fingers crossed. you cant do much with rear plates as the hole in rear bumper is too big.
