You have a keyboard with 104/105 keys on, what's the excuse now?

I have stubby fingers! OK!

Anyone else noticed e-mails english, grammar and punctuation seem to be steadily getting worse.

In todays e-mail I have received:

West wishes - Best wishes

Have me asking you - Has asked me to ask you

Scibbles - Scribbles

....all from clients

What about acronyms like LOL PMSL LMAO, are these acceptable? If so, why? Because people know what they mean which then leads to me to there are people who also know what txt u l8r (example) means.

Acronyms save you lots of letters indeed over a complete phrase. Plus they were designed for Internet usage. Also acronyms are "valid" English language usage.

Txt speak saves you a few letters over a word.

PS I counted 105 keys on my keyboard but wont use quite a few of those to post!! ;)

You actually counted!? LMAO!

What is so bad about txt speak, labelling people by the way the write is just poor.

As someone already said, on an Internet forum, we have no other basis on which to form our opinions of other people.

Well, the only people I know who use so-called "txt spk" ARE idiots - they must be because they'll merrily text back and forth with this marvellously shortened mode of communication, costing themselves a fortune and ultimately taking longer than a quick phone call would have done.

I don't want to read "txt" on the forum because I don't understand it.

I don't WANT to understand it - how would you like it if I started writing in morse? It's not hard, yet I wouldn't expect everyone else to understand it, nor to spend the time learning it.

English language, spelling and grammar is the way it is, and is unform across the whole world, because it enables people to communicate effectively. Change the spelling, change the meaning...or at least force people to decipher the meaning, which by definition reduces the efficiency and effectiveness.

LOL Making me out to be a bad guy here when all I am saying is that it does not bother me as to how people write and that I am not going to form an opinion of someone just on how they write.

The things that you write are only subject to interpretation if you do not make yourself clear - poor writing skills.

Oh, and from this and my previous post, you probably think I'm either some kind of pompous ass, or a grammar-nerd. You can't help yourself, but you've just formed an opinion of someone you've never met, based on fewer than two hundred written words. But hopefully that opinion isn't that I'm a "txt spking" prat, and that's all I care about :D

Actually believe it or not I havent formed an opinion of you until you tried to sub consciously tell me that you are a pompous ass!! LOL Seriously though, I think I have only formed an opinion of one person on this board and that flat4_ire, he is a pratt!! So am I weird for not judging people on here from what they type??

Neil Peart (voted 'Best Rock Drummer' five years in a row) agreed to a competition in Modern Drummer to win his old drum kit. His condition was that any entrants had to write him an essay. His reason? Something like this: "If you can't be bothered to construct an answer carefully and take time over grammar and spelling, how careful will you be in contructing and executing your music? Chances are you will be equally sloppy and lacking in precision."

I'm not sure that his reasoning is valid, but I like the cut of his jib.

Personally, I think texting has a lot to answer for. It's too long-winded to type in anything complex, so it encourages us to use short, simple sentences and a very basic vocabulary. If you are doing that all day long, as many are, it must surely have an effect on your ability to switch into something a bit more sophisticated and adult. It's f**king baby-talk as far as I'm concerned.

Their Lot forbad: nor circumscrib'd alone

Their growing Virtues, but their Crimes confin'd;

Forbad to wade through Slaughter to a Throne,

And shut the Gates of Mercy on Mankind,

The struggling Pangs of conscious Truth to hide,

To quench the Blushes of ingenuous Shame,

Or heap the Shrine of Luxury and Pride

With Incense, kindled at the Muse's Flame.

Far from the madding Crowd's ignoble Strife,

Their sober Wishes never learn'd to stray;

Along the cool sequester'd Vale of Life

They kept the noiseless Tenor of their Way.

Yet ev'n these Bones from Insult to protect

Some frail Memorial still erected nigh,

With uncouth Rhimes and shapeless Sculpture deck'd,

Implores the passing Tribute of a Sigh.

'Along the cool, sequestered vale of life/They kept the noiseless tenor of their way' (Thomas Gray,1751)

'i was like whatever lmao and he goes i told u once wont tel u agan lol' (half the population, 2005)

To be fair they both make about the same sense to me :rlol:
