nickyboy
Can anyone give me a hand on meta-tags? I've posted up my website but it doesn't seem to get picked up by google. I've added keyword metatags to the home page but when I google them it doesn't pick them up. Do I need to do a different meta tag other than the keyword one? Or does it take a couple of days for search engines to pick up the meta tags or have I made that up? Any help appreciated!!! Nick
colsoop
I was going to ask the same thing myself. We are awaiting a response
mawby
It'll take a couple of days. But also remember google doesn't rely much on meta tags but instead uses page rankings. See http://www.google.com/technology/
Pete
It'll take a couple of days. and then some. I've seen some sites take up to 30 days to appear. I usually quote 3 months to people to stop them looking and hassling me that their site isn't in Google yet!
monkey3
I think it can take up to weeks for search engines to pick up your site. The best way to get your site noticed is by including links on forums and other sites. There is a list of some of the main forums that the search engines use somewhere, but I cant remember where. Also, google is a bit picky about some of the websites it will list (believe it or not). If you have too many keywords in your pages, that's bad. If your main page redirects, that's bad. If you don't have much text or the keywords don't appear in the text, that's bad. have a look at http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/article.php/2167931
Lewis
Nick, do a google sitemap of your site and submit it to google, will be listed normally within 48hours, we do this regularly. It also means that the pages you WANT to appear are shown primarily. Make sure you have a robots file and make sure that spiders can index your site (run traversal reports). Lewt me know if you get stuck
Angarak
Submit your site to http://www.dmoz.org for free, it will get you listed (eventually) in some of the search engines that want to charge you for a listing. The way the page is coded also effects the 'rankability' of your website. Having keywords in the pages: :: Filename (ie: keyword.html) :: Title (ie: keyword) :: Headers (ie: keyword) :: Main Text :: Linkable text (ie: keyword text) :: Image ALT text (ie: blah.gif) Bear in mind you should'nt over-do the number of keywords as mentioned previously (it can count against you), nor should you 'abuse' the image ALT text from an accessibility point of view (dont stuff the image ALT with loads of keywords). As mentioned previously, meta tags are not used that much these days, its mainly 'link popularity' and keyword content throughout the page. The server the website is hosted on can also affect how you rank. If your website is hosted on a server configured to host many websites using the same IP theres more chance of you getting 'blacklisted' (dropped from the index) should some of the other website owners on the same server spam the search engines with submissions (Search engines only tolerate so many submissions in a set time). Ideally, you'd want to host your website with a company that gives each website its own unique IP address. Getting your website linked to on blog sites related to your websites content can help greatly with link-popularity. Supralookin
I'm no top of the ladder web designer but that's what I do for a living and I can tell you now that getting to the top of the search engines is easier said than done. One of the reasons Google introduced Google Ad Words couple of years back. You basically pay per keyword but you only appear as a sponsered link to the right. You pay per click which can get quite costly. If you wanna get on the left my advice would be to make sure all your images are titled in relevence to your website. For example: Artist's web site selling canvas's, he would name all pics with keywords such as canvaspaint;artistuk;buycanvas etc etc. You'll know if google has spidered your website because if you type in the domain using www. etc it should appear, if not give it time. Akso try submitting links all over the internet, this is usually a free option and can send loads of traffic your way. Don't forget also not to use too many meta words as this can go against you. Hope this helps:)

Absolutely spot on. Its hard to get listed on the top 100, let alone the top 30 and top 10...especially if your line of business is very popular (ie: window fitters). There are too many pages on the internet for the Search Engines to index, so dont think that submitting your site will definitely get you listed. Try not to submit your site more than once a month to reduce the chance of blacklisting yourself. Good Luck
