jagman
did an oil change today, on removing the plastic tray, a heavy lump of steel fell out..... on close inspection, the outer ring of the crankshaft pulley had separated the belt tensioner had pulled the belt onto the remaining rubber inner and still worked! how lucky is that?..... Rob
Mine separated as I entered a roundabout, that was a thrilling moment I can tell you. Have you had the belt, or cambelt changed in the last few months?
jagman
yes had a new belt 2 months ago, i guess they used prybar to lever the fan belt on ..
Rob
AHA, nope, it will have been a blowtorch to heat up the pulley nut. I posted about this a while ago. The heat knackers the rubber damper, causing it to eventually shear off. My garage warned me I might need a new pulley at £180 ish, but later told me it was fine. It came off later of course, as posted above. I paid for a new pulley, but sucessfully argued not to pay the labour, as they shouldn't have advised me it was OK at the time. The manager said he would advise Toyota of the risk of using the blowtorch technique. The pessimist in me says its only a matter of time before someone has an accident. I managed to control mine, but to suddenly lose PS as you enter a roundabout is quite dodgy.

There are more and more cases of these pulleys failing and not because of blowtorches etc , its worth thinking about replacing them when you do the cambelt , im going for an aftermarket like a fluid damper , this is becoming a prob. in the states where there are far more of these cars . Gaz Walker
Dude, Is it a Dynamic/Harmonic Balancer, we've had one custom made for the RB26DETT, they are about £800 and the HKS version is £1800... It becomes very weak (the stock version) at about 8 grand on the GTR and we all know how many revs they can take... They are required when a car runs 10.99s or less. Gaz.
