chilli
I do like Google Earth, it's quite amazing. Have you seen google hacks? http://www.googleearthhacks.com/ good source for cool links. and have you looks at area 51? especially all the nuclear testing? it's quite astonishing to say the least! http://www.informantnews.com/pics3/googlearea51.html http://www.googleearthhacks.com/dlfile10269/Area-51-in-3D.htm I have a really good link to the testing zone somewhere, will post it up if I can find it. Appologies if you've already seen it. PS: I'm no area 51 nut, the nuclear testing does amaze me though. Edit: Found the links http://www.snydertechnology.com/GoogleEarth.php http://www.snydertechnology.com/gearth/kmz%20Files/CratersAsFarAsTheEyeCanSee.kmz

ivan
My users can only get to sites that I specifically allow - so no Google Earth here. Mind you, I think I might just do an audit on the few Managers PCs that have unlimited access...

chilli
Indeed, Im the IT Manager so I get to decide the policies we use... JB burn the witch lol (joking, I know it's your job) but is it a bit like the traffic warden of the IT world?
Branners
This really isnt going to go down well..I actually think traffic wardens do a good job. Dont park illegally and theres no problem Oh, and the 3 users with Google Earth had a visit from my flying monkeys today, they also took out Picasa Hello and Itunes at the same time. I love automatic software audit tools. We couldnt see how to block google earth itself as it uses port 80 and talks to Google.com for its info... RedM
You might not be able to block GE but can you not prevent the users from installing the software in the first place?
chilli
a program called "websense" would allow selective filtering on port 80 traffic (but I didn't say that). I'm only pulling your leg, someones got to do it lol

JB if you have a ISA server you should be able to. would just need to find then entire URL of where the main data comes from. i do this with the google toolbar. http://www.google.com is fine but i specificly block http://www.google.com/toolbar* (or whatever it is)
hob
cant you just limit users not to be able to install new software?
Branners
unfortunately we have to give some users Power User on the local machine to be able to run some of the older apps so they have the ability to install software that way. Most users are not giving that power but some are. I will take a look at ISA but I cant see us stumping up the extra when we can just audit the machines and have a 'word' with any offenders JB
RedM
BTW how do you know your daily broadband use is it something your isp provide? Yes. Only 16mb so far today. Probably because I'm not at home 'poorly'.
chilli
http://www.mathiasmikkelsen.com/websense/ lol yeah I didn't say there aren't ways and means to get around these things but presumably one of the first things you block are sites like this (and anonymisers in general) lol, unless I am missing something in the way it works?
