Guest alltrac
hey guys, i just bought a 95 tt 6 spd mkiv supra and im not sure if it shifts normal or not. it has 30,000 miles on it and when shifting i get a little kick in the shifter then it drops into gear? someone told me that this is noraml due to this trans being a race transmission. i normally shift at around 3,000 rpm and thats when it happens most. if i bring the rpms higher say around 3,500 or 4,000 it dosent really happen. is this normal? i have driven other stick supras and celicas and none of them do this. thanks
Soonto_HAS_soop
You bought a TT and never shift above 4000rpm? As for the trans, it has been refered to as a little agricultural and similar to that of a tractors, but that's due to the style of box that it is. supragold
I don't get a kick but can feel it going in if that makes any sense?
Chris Wilson
The clutch may be dragging, does it go into gear from neutral, when stationary, easily, or do you have to mash the clutch into the carpet. Of course, if you are American, that would explain everything, just buy an auto..... (Can I say that these days? Well I just have, so there)
Guest alltrac
no it goes into gear normally in nuetral. just seems that when im shifting it dosent just plop into gear i have to at times just tap the gas to bring the rpms up just a little before it goes in completly smooth. could just be me. i drive a 90 celica normally and the way the celica shifts just feels diffrent, when compared to the supra. They are not the nicest of boxes, strong, but a horrible change, IMO. May be worth draining the oil, hot, then refilling ensuring you use ONLY the genuine Toyota ooil for this box. Your clutch pedal should be adjusted on the pushrod at the top of it, from within the car, to have about 10mm free play when pressed by hand, before you feel it take up the "slack". More than that and it may not disengage freely. HTH.
Alex
Replace the fluid with ONLY Toyota V160 oil. Search this site for the product code. You need 2L's
Class One
Getting alot of our colonial cousins on here recently. I wonder if that's because supraforums is down? (Not a gripe btw )
whitesupratt
When i change gear , epecialy intno 2nd and ESPECIALY under about 3000rpm, (i try to avoid that low)! its like it just tries to flick the shifter back at ya for a split second, like a bit of resistance, then drops in fine! i find it worsens the lower the revs, if you drive really really slow and change at like 2000rpm its horrible to gear change, proper jerky. at about 4000 upwards, nice a smooth. mines 93' TT
chilli
I don't find any flick or kick back, but I do find 2nd can be stubborn when the car is completely cold, after a quick warm up it's lovely, nice and solid like a 'proper' gearbox lol Does sound like it could be an oil thing, maybe last time it was changed with the wrong stuff, well worth changing it to be sure
supRo
Chilli/Matt, Worth changing oil with V160. For some silly reason the 6 speed gearboxes sometimes have a sticker on them stating to use Autobox oil!!!!!!!! So on previous change it might have had non V160 oil in it
colsoop
My 6 speed is very positive and has a good change to it. get the oil swapped for v160 as said and then see how it feels after a few miles.
whitesupratt
My box does have an auto fluid sticker on it, but im going to have the oil changed anyway when phoenix sort out my other problems, car isnt on the road at the mo anyhow. mine is the same tho, once warm, nice and smooth change
SteveR
My J-Spec 6 gear TT shifts fine. As is normal going into 1st & 2nd gear can feel slightly clunky, especially when cold, but apart from that it's a dream. Gear changes have a very solid feel to them

Gear changes have a very solid feel to them I'd say mine is roughly like this, I don't think there is anything wrong with it but I'll bear it in mind if the change gets any more stubborn. Once its warm it's lovely, I really like the solid feel to the change, it's very positive and exact - I know some people call it agricultural, ok it's not as silky smooth or spongy as some cars - but I like it this way personally
