Questions about broadband access

1. I've set up my account and used my own hardware. I go online simply by clicking FF or IE. I know that with some providers you click on their icon and it opens a dialog/connection box that asks if you want to connect to the net. Does that mean that the connection there is not always on or is it totally superfluous? I don't have any icons in the taskbar showing that a connection is active. When I close IE or FF I don't get asked if I want to close the connection. Is that okay?

2. How do I cut off my connection without cancelling my account? Unplug the router?

3. How many mb do you use on average each day? I was gobsmacked to find I sent/received 136 mb in about 5-6hours last night. Normal surfing plus some software updates.

Your USB modem (I assuming this is what you are using) will be sync'd when your system boots up, but only logs into your account when you try to access IE/FF.

You mention later that you have a router, but if this was the case it shouldn't ask you for a username/password as this would be set in the routers configuration.

Can you post what hardware you are using?

I had a free month with my ISP and managed to download 148Gb - normally though 5Gb a month.

Within the windows connections settings you should be able to set the broadband connection to display an icon next to the clock when it's connected, that way you can see what it's up to.

Your router should be permanently connected to PlusNet using the settings you've given it, your PC boots, connects to the router and then you are connected to the Internet - happy days.

Download amounts vary for me but I don't so much P2P stuff, mainly games, internet and the odd streaming video / music. Looking at the PlusNet member centre seems to suggest I use no more than 10GB each month - that's 2 PCs on pretty much every night as well.

Sorry I missed your calls last night BTW, I was upstairs on the other PC and had headphones on, didn't see the tiny red light flashing on my phone until 10am this morning.

I have a Netgear DG834 router connected to PC by enthernet cable doodah.

Since last night my usage record shows 277mb from surfing, a few software updates and a couple of movie clips. I make that about 20-25bg per month. Seems odd considering that I visit only the same few sites as when I was on dial-up. I couldn't have been getting through 130 odd mb per day, could I?

How would one do that then?

EDIT: Done it.

If you're constantly downloading *stuff* you might find that either windows is trying to update itself, or you have some form spyware.

As you are using a router you should have no mention of username/password when you try to connect.

As soon as you switch a router on it will synch with the exchange and then submit your username/password to your ISP for validation. This usually takes approx 30s.

When you come to use IE/FF it should just go straight on the net - no authentication required (because your router has done this for you)

If you are getting a message you may have the system set to attempt dial up first - you need to check your connection settings within IE and FF

Windows has finished updating and I have three spyware progs all giving the all clear.

I've downloaded a tool for monitoring usage and it shows nothing happening when browsers are closed except that the router seems to be chatting back and forth to the PC.
