Rayman
Probably a stupid question to someone who knows about pc's but i want to reduce the amount of programmes xp runs from start up you know in the bottom right hand corner as its too sluggish. How do i stop some of these progs from starting up, i cant remember where i go to sort this, presuming its somewhere in control panel? Hellp! colsoop
start> run type "msconfig" then go to the startup tab be careful what you disable !
MaveriK
Some of the apps you may be able to tell not to load at start-up by right hand mouse clicking on their icon and configuring. Otherwise you are looking at a regedit and if you dont know what your doing i wouldnt advise it. If you do then run regedt32 and navigate to HKLM - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Run " " Runonce " " RunOnceEx There is also a simular key in HKLU. If the machine is running slow i would start with defrag, virus check, spyware check and general disk cleanup. Good Luck!

Shovels
post up a list of the things you have in msconfig and I'll try and help with the ones you can safely disable. There is quite a lot on XP optimisation if you want to go a bit further: http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm There's loads of services that XP sticks in which are completely unecessary. Rayman
Smtray NvCpl nwiz hpgs2wnd ccApp ccRegVfy ProDsl qttask realsched msnmsgr ctfmon popupscn HPAIo device Microsoftoffice This mean anything to you?
Shovels
Smtray- This is to do with your sound card - Leave it NvCpl - Nvidia, leave this nwiz - Nvidia, leave this hpgs2wnd - HP Share to Web - I'd personally remove it ccApp - Norton Anti-Virus - I hate Norton AV, but you're probably gonna want to leave this ccRegVfy- Another Norton Component ProDsl - This will probably be your DSL modem - Leave it qttask - Quicktime Task - Get rid realsched - Real Player - Get rid msnmsgr - MSN Messanger - I would get rid, as I don't use it ctfmon - Related to Microsoft Office - AFAIK you can't easily remove this one popupscn - Pop up scanner - leave it HPAIo device - Related to your printer - leave it Microsoftoffice - Microsoft Office - Get Rid You might want to see what some of the other members rekon - but basically there isn't much in there that's going to be slowing the system down too much. As I said earlier I can't stand Norton products and I've seen them make machines run slow. HP devices tend to install a lot of extra crap. Also check your Start --> Programmes --> Startup folder You may have some unecessary apps running in there as well. If you do want to uninstall ctfmon --> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q282599
