Underworld
Hey guys, Ive been reading as much as poss. People seem to say that BPU'ing the car will really make all the diff. Any idea roughly on how much BHP increase youd get from a BPU? Im guessing +40 bhp? From my limited technical knowledge? Its very easy to say it depends on the components, lets pretend were using nice quality stuff Just looking for a guestimate. EDIT: Oh, whilst were on the topic, whats the average cost for BPU. Thx
tbourner
Well I'm BPU and I managed 365 at the hubs - which I'm claiming is near enough 400BHP. So that's about +80 BHP!!! Bang for buck you can't beat it.
JohnA
..Im guessing +40 bhp? ... you're not too far off. It might be a bit more, depending on boost levels. It feels more dramatic than it looks on paper though, because typically all the extra power comes right after 4Krpm, so the 'flat' torque curve becomes a bit peaky, so the car feels more alive at full throttle. merckx
If you've got a standard car including the exhaust you're looking at £1000-£1200 just for the parts.
Pete
Prices from memory (and my memory is pretty bad) RS*R (brand new lucky buy) - £230 FCD - £80 CW Decat pipes - £270 1.2 Restrictor ring - £? Boost Guage - £ varies greatly 100 quid? Plugs - £50 Fitting - £100/150? So for about 800 quid I'd say.
Nic
Depends what boost you increase to really, 1.2bar should see at least 40hp. If you keep going with the performance mods, you can squeeze out around an extra 100hp using stock blowers ie. around 430hp.
tbourner
Inlcuding prices I paid: RS*R (brand new lucky buy) - £230 Came on car. FCD - £80 CW Decat pipes - £270 £150 from Dude. 1.2 Restrictor ring - £? Came with pipes. Boost Guage - £ varies greatly 100 quid? £40 - needs replacing really. Plugs - £50 £12 - none of this Iridium rubbish!! Fitting - £100/150? So for about 800 quid I'd say. £400. :D
Pete
Inlcuding prices I paid: I was being fairly conservative with my prices. To be honest I have standard plugs, and no boost guage.. 2nd decat pipe was already on the car when I bought it. So I've only spent 470ish on parts in reality. chilli
Regardless of the figures (after all we can't actually measure the fly wheel HP anyway, only infer it) - the difference is very notcable and significant! It made mine feel like a different car Mine cost ~£220 for BPU (double de-cat and restrictor from PW) and a further ~£100 for the walbro as a safety precaution rest was on the car. Think I'll be adding a FPR too to make sure the fuel systsem can cope with future demands.

Just making a point that it can be a very cheap 400BHP if you're lucky enough!

Just making a point that it can be a very cheap 400BHP if you're lucky enough! 370-380hp-ish is relatively cheap, it starts to get a bit more expensive though, getting the extra power eg. IC, cams, fueling, ECU, etc.
chilli
Slight tangent: Can anyone with experience compare costs against the rb26dett skyline engine, this was something I've always wondered about and from what I could see the skyline looked more pricey to tune, but I could be mistaken. tbourner
I think I was lucky with mine, my engine seems very clean (Paul actually licked my dipstick [oo-err] a week after an oil change because he was amazed at how clean it still was!!), and I'm very proud of my 364 RHHP from what is basically just an exhaust system!! Even 5% loss from the hubs puts me over 380 BHP, most car owners pay hundreds for 10-15BHP it's pretty amazing!!
