JohnA
...What started off as a service is amounting to a huge bill. And once work is underway, there doesn't seem to be any way back. that's the general idea
Gamer
Stick up for yourself and your rights, if you do not you will be kicking yourself afterwards. So what if you upset your local mechanic, whats more important to you? Your car and money or his feelings. I would take it to a reputable Supra mechanic who cares about his business and is not trying to make a fast buck.
Jake
How's this progressing Darren? Did you get your car out of there and to another garage? Hopefully you are near to getting it sorted out by now. Did your engine guy ever post up the pictures of the work that he said needs doing? I might have missed it in another thread. My guy tells me he's rebuilt around 50 engines. Says he will post some pictures up on here later to confirm the desperate need of my engine. Dash Rendar
Hi guys Sorry for being so quiet. I decided to leave the car at the unit and have it done, as per my guy's original recommendation. He's always been good to me in the past and he has been eager to do a sterling job. The work is progressing and there are a few before and after photos available here. There's a couple of pics showing the hideous state of the camshafts, and pics showing all the engine bits painstakingly cleaned up. There are more pictures yet to come, but they're not on the site yet. The car should be ready for pickup in a couple of days. The only outstanding work is to have some pipes made for a new FMIC. It's a real bummer that I've been without my car so long. I even went and bought a radio-controlled Supra from JL (yes, just like the one James has got) to alleviate the depression. But I guess you can't rush a job like this. Having had a nasty experience with an engine rebuild years ago, I've always been paranoid about getting this sort of thing done right. Even though this wasn't a full rebuild, but just the head off (I'm afraid I don't really know what I'm talking about), it's still a big job that deserves care and attention!! I hope to be back in the Supra community soon... And fully BPU'd!
Gamer
Your guy = Paul ? Good luck mate, I hope it all works out ok. After reading some of the horror stories on here I hope this turns out good for you and goes some way to help 'Your Guy' with his reputation. Dash Rendar
I hope so too!
Pete
The thing is... The car was actually running fine when I took it in. You haven't got rockers. None of us have. I understand their need for anonymity I think a second opinion may be required. Any garage that told me that I had problems with parts of my car that the manufacturer never put in the engine would ring huge alarm bells. STOP RIGHT THERE......take it to some one who has a clue about your car. omg I'd be telling them to put it back exactly as it was and get the car the hell out of there! Take it to someone who knows what they are talking about. I would take it to a reputable Supra mechanic who cares about his business and is not trying to make a fast buck. Your guy = Paul ? From the pics it did look pretty manky. All that lot will be a pretty penny, hope it all works out ok.
JohnA
I wonder how often were the oil changes on this car... Crickey, just by undoing the oilcap you could see the horror....the horror.... http://www.max-boost.co.uk/stuff/col_kurtz_med.jpg
Jake
Blimey what a mess! How could it have gotten into such a state? Good luck with it mate. I hope it's all plain sailing from here. Must be costing a bomb!
Dash Rendar
I had the oil changed when I bought the car, a little over a year ago. Since then I've done about 7K miles. However, the turbos have been leaking oil since I bought the car, and I've no idea how long before hand. Since I didn't have any smoke from the exhaust, I've been reluctant to take action until Paul gave me a strong nudge in the right direction. JohnA
The pics in that website are not very high-rez. ...but from the little I can see, oil changes had been neglected and/or crap oil had been used. If you're lucky there was no serious damage done in the rod/crank bearings, but looks like the turbo bearings have already bought the farm. That's the reason people take off the oil caps etc before buying a car. If you see funny business there or in the coolat tank for example, you know big bills are round the corner. Cunning sellers tend to cover up these signs though.
Dash Rendar
I do have high-res pics, but obviously did some shrinking for the site. Thanks for the tips... You live and you learn!!

Ian C
I didn't see a picture of your rockers on that site I found this though: "But unfortunately our worst fears were realised. Oil had been forced into the engine over a long period of time" That pesky oil eh? Maybe it leaked past the spark plugs. Hope it all eventually gets sorted, anyway -Ian
Dash Rendar
I'm afraid you'll have to allow some artistic licence on that one... I wrote the content myself based on my limited understanding of how these things work. I'm sure I'll have all technical details corrected in due course!! Guest slow dog
From the pics it did look pretty manky. Chris Wilson
Next time I dyno, maybe I'll turn off the aircon I believe the A/C turns off under WOT conditions anyway. Anyone know for sure?
JohnA
Yes, it turns off at full throttle.
Pete
Yes, it turns off at full throttle. That's clever! I never cease to be amazed at the technology thrown into the Supra.
JohnA
It's got more clever bits. Shame that people assume that they know better and start swapping for aftermarket 'upgrade' bits without first taking the time to study how the stock items work. The two-stage fuel pump voltage is a good example. Cue the moronic fuel pump 'mod' where full voltage is applied all the time. Even during closed loop. Both of the above Supra tech solutions used to be drag-race 'tricks' in the good'ol'days
Chris Wilson
That's clever! I never cease to be amazed at the technology thrown into the Supra. Most cars with air con have this feature. Even my old Volvos... In fact I can't think of a modern car with A/C that doesn't have this.
Dash Rendar
OI!! I was much happier ignorantly believing that my aircon was to blame for my poor dyno result. I'm going to pretend these last few posts never happened. Grrr.
b_have
Uhm, am I missing something here? How can blown/worn turbos have anything to do with these pics? The area shown is within the cam cover!
Guest Terry S
Yes, it turns off at full throttle. Is it WOT or RPM?
