Whizzing Turbos

Can anyone help?

I have had and loved my 94 tt for a year now, and have always enjoyed the pleasent whizz of the turbos, I thought that was normal. Recently the whizz has become harsher and louder. It starts at about 2,000 revs and continues to the cut out, you can only really hear it at low speeds and high gears bringing the turbos in slowly.

The car seems to boost ok and there is no smoke out the exhaust . There are no engine mods to mention. Wot could it be, is no1 turbo on its way out?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am lossing sleep over my baby:(

I had the same whistle! But it got louder and louder!

One of my hoses was leaking (small hole), but when I had them all replaced, the whistle stayed.

So basically the turbo's were knackered and had to be replaced.

(they still seemed to boost OK-ish)

I hope for you its just something with the hoses, otherwise it might be really expensive.

How much is a second hand set, or can they be re-conditioned, wot would the cost be.

I was told this week there about £800 each(on an exchange basis) from Toyota, this could vary abit of course. For that price your probably not too far away from getting hybrids.

If you can source a second hand set you would imagine they would be less than this but TBH its waiting for a set to come up. Try JPS, Option etc to see if someones upgraded recently and left their old set.

I don't know whether id trust a 2nd hand set without having them reconditioned, thats only my opinion. Ive remember hearing the figure £500 for reconditioning turbos and cant for the life of me remember whether thats each or both. Maybe someone will clarify that bit, alternatively just ask the garages when you call.

Oh can get a second hand set for £450.

No they will make a noise, like a silent whistle. BUT mine were almost deafening, so loud! Not pleasant

They are not that bad, you can only hear it in high gears, boosting gradually, with the window open. They still sound quite fit, just louder than I have noticed before.

The other thing is there is no whizzing when reving the engine from under the hood.

Swaping between Super and Premium unleaded couldn't have any thing to do with it could it? Surley not!
