RedM
Why does it take BT 7-10 days to enable a broandband connection? Surely it's just a couple of switches and an engineer popping down to the exchange.
edd_t
they say they need to do speed checks on the line! but im surprised that takes so long!
Pete
Think of the volume of transactions a day they have to contend with. 940,000 new broadband users in the last quarter of 2005 !! There's several checks done initially to ensure there's no "incompatable products" on the line - that usually takes 1-2 days to come back. The exchange will already have a number of tails to use for ADSL. Sometimes there's not enough and they have to upgrade the exchange with more capacity. Dunno what else they get up to.. Then someone has to issue you with passwords etc. The main problem with BT is its such a huge animal with massive departments each doing their own thing, it all gets a bit slow. ivan
It's because of all the corporate people jumping the queue - like we do.
Supragal
Yup, it takes no time at all to physically switch it on but it's the checks and the backlog that take the time.

Pete
I think it is getting better now. There was a time last year when they were upgrading all the exchanges to faster kit to support the newer standards emerging (ADSL2+ or whatever) and also with Local Loop Unbundling going on it was stretching their engineers somewhat.
