I hate IBM

A while ago you may remember me ranting about my PC and the fact I had to upgrade to a different IBM motherboard in order to get AGP... Happy away but then I needed a better PSU to power the graphics card I then bought.

Of course IBM don't want people to do this so they design their cases to only take their offerings, none of which are powerful enough for my needs - a hacksaw and a hammer later and the new PSU is in, OK the drives stick out a bit (3") at the front now but it all works.

Then the PSU went funny this week so I sent it back - while it's away I thought I'd buy a new case so picked one up today - the next IBM related fun began tonight, all their connectors are 'IBM style' so the motherboard I bought doesn't have the right connectors for the new case.

So now I need a new motherboard really but most new ones don't have AGP... Which means a new graphics card again (3rd one in 2 months!) and probably loads of other crap.

The conclusion I've finally reached is that you can't polish a turd, don't try to save money by upgrading an old PC unless it's generic - this doesn't help me for the moment though, I have a weekend on my own coming up, no games PC and I'm on call so I can't go anywhere... It could end in DIY and housework!!!

The horror.

mike, if you get a new board then get one with PCIe and I will give you a GFX card, I have one sitting here, it's not the fastest in the world but it is brand new 64mb and yours for the princely sum of a pint next time I see you.

Thanks for the offer, the only problem is I've just shelled out daft money on a 256mb 6800 Ultimate on AGP because that's the best an IBM branded board could offer me - £400 wasted due to poor research :(

I might pick up one of these tomorrow so I can play at the weekend and then look into a full upgrade later in the year:

What processor do you have? I've got one an agp board for an Athlon XP sitting here if you want it.

IBM are idiots, unfortunately my company has just been taken over by American manager types, and we now have bi-monthly meetings that seem to be patriotic hype-markets where they attempt to 'big-up' the hard drive industry calling it 'sexy' and 'exciting'. We'll be going the same way as IBM VERY soon.

Not surprised you are having these problems....none of the components and neither the case was designed for users to start swapping bits with whatever they believe is better......if you want to build your own PC then buy the right case for a start....

All the major vendors are like this including HP...

I dont see you dropping in Honda bits in a Toyota......
