Brake fluid top up - help the technically incompetent

Getting the flashing warning light on acceleration and braking so I'm going to check/add brake fluid.

Er... so where is the thing I'm meant to be checking, and where does one obtain this 'brake fluid' stuff from, and is there different types and what type do I want?

I check oil and water but beyond that I pay a small manservant at the garage to do my bidding as I don't understand cars.

Fill it up with RBF600 Motul Brake Fluid from Opie Oils or CW....

But when filling it up wobble the resevoir as it tends to report a false full...Ie it hasn't filled all the sub divides properly.

Blimey, I'm selling the thing I don't want to splash out. Can't I just bung Halfords Super Glug or something into it?

Ta for the filling tip.

  • 11 months later...

My brake fluid is very low and I cant get it into a garage and am off on a lcouple of long runs over the Xmas period.

I have absolutely no idea what is in there at the moment but was filling up my birds car with petrol earlier and saw and picked up some Esso dot 4 (it was a spur of the moment buy).

Is it OK just to put this straight into the brake fluid container direct? I deffo can't get to a garage to have it done properly, and the warning light is coming on loads now.

Thanks for any help.

Edit: Sorry, I have a NA by the way.

That's fine to use. If the fluid was very low the light would be on all the time, it's very conservative. If you fill to the very top with worn pads, fitting new pads will eject some fluid back into the reservoir and it will overflow. So if your pads are low and the lights not on all the time I'd leave it and check it regularly.

Thanks a lot Chris.

I will put enough in to get the level sort of midway between the max and min which should see me through the immediate panic hopefully.

I've no idea if the pads are worn low, (no idea how to check really), but will get it into the garage after Chrimbo when things are a little less hectic.

thanks again

Billy
