An exact breakdown of what my car costs to run.

Insure: £19/month

Petrol: ~£12/week

Tank: ~£25

Dont you just love second cars! :D It will relieve the Supra from the stupid 30min round trip to work, popping over the girly's and general going to the shops type stuff. And most importantly decreasing the STUPID amounts of petrol I go through (you feel my pain) and hopefully prolonging the life of my lovely Supe.

Get a second car, dont hesitate.

Been thinking about getting a tub to save the Supra.

What's the best sort of thing/make to go for with cheapo insurance?

Want something fairly reliable not bothered about looks.......something small?

Do you insure seperate, TPF&T ?

Been there, done that, got the T shirt (and binned it) ;)

I find that whenever I've had a second (cheapo) car, I seemed to spend most of my time driving that, and never the decent one :(

Personally, I enjoy the 30 minute drives to jobs etc. it's the best part of the day :) It's a great feeling when you've just had a crap day working, to jump into the Supra. All the frustrations just seem to melt away.

I'm sure, after dealing with some of my customers, the thought of having to drive home in a Focus or Vectra etc. would be enough to have me searching for the razor blades :D

Then, of course, you've got the problem of two lots of tax and insurance (even if it's cheaper for the 2nd car) and twice the time and (most of) the costs of maintenance.

If you really can't afford to run the Supra on a daily basis, you'd be better off selling it, and buying one decent car that you can afford, rather than owning a nice car, and driving round in a shitheap.

All IMHO, of course :run:

Having a second car for all those crap A to B journeys is the way to go IMHO, if you generally do a lot of driving that is.

purchased my clio for £600 over 2 years ago. It was on 70k and really well serviced etc. Since then I've done over 30k miles in it for a total cost of about £200 in servicing and a sets of tyres (£40 each). It does roughly 50mpg or so when I drive it sensibly, it costs around £200 a year to insure (less now I think) and most importantly, thats 30k+ miles not on the supe.

I really destroyed my last car by using it every day, all the time for 5 years, that's a lot of wear and tear on a car, especially a high performance one and even when you really try to look after it, it still takes it's toll.

Ok so the clio now looks a bit rough, but even if I scrapped it for nothing tomorrow I havn't really lost out. How else can you do this many reliable miles for under 1k in total (everything minus the petrol that is).

Edit: plus in theory the money saved on petrol for all those A to B journeys is money for mods on the supe (not that it always works out like that in practice of course, nice idea though)

how would you feel if you pulled up at a set of lights in you're in your 1990 1.0 Micra and next to you was some old school mates or ex girlfriend in a decent car?

Personally my ego wouldn't be able to handle that knowing they they're thinking, yeah Steve's done well for himself blah blah. I'd have to have one of those stickers in the back window "my other cars a Supra"

but then i've always been worried about what others think of me and should really get over it by now.

Financially it probably would work out any better for me as i probably do less than 8,000 mile pa. Plus i start to get withdrawal feelings if i go 2 days without driving it !

Im having the joys of a second car at the moment and cant wait to get back in my supra. The worst feeling is when you see nice cars racing each other and you just know you would kick there ass.

I cant wait to get mine back. The little journeys....infact any journey is made fun in a supra!

Things like this don't bother me. It's like sometimes the richest people don't need to show off and the poorest people try too hard... I am neither but I appreciate the supe that much more when I havn't driven it for a few days :D

this happens sometimes, but there will always be other opportunities :D

also I've found that you can really push a little car around, I think you can surprise a few people in their bigger more powerful cars at just because you haven't got the bhp you can still go quickly, just need to keep the speed and momentum up lol.

It all depends on how you view the Supra.

To me, thats 30k miles of Supra driving opportunities wasted :D

My Supra is a car to be used.

Of course I look after it and am careful where I park it etc. but at the end of the day its a car, and needs to be driven to get the best from it.

I'd much rather take the inevitable loss on the Supra from having driven and enjoyed it every day, rather than wrapped it up in cotton wool, and still see it depreciate like crazy.

Cars like ours aren't investments, they probably never will be, so to my mind the best thing to do with them is get some use out of them.

If you're doing an enormous mileage each year and don't want to spend the money in petrol for the Supra, I suppose I can see some point in keeping it for a weekend car, but TBH there are a lot better "fun cars" available for weekend use, if you've got a sensible (read boring ;)) car for everyday.

As I said before, I've been through all this, years ago, spent all my time driving a heap of shit, while my decent car sat in the garage doing nothing.

When I came to sell it, I still only got the going rate for it, and someone else got the benefit of my non use of it. :(

Nobody knows what's going to happen in the future, this time next year, this stupid fcuking government may have banned cars over 2 litres, or put petrol up to £20 per gallon (unlikely, I know, but its just an example :)) If that was the case, at least I'm not going to be saying "I wish I'd used the Supra when I'd had the opportunity"

This time 10 years ago, nobody thought that we'd all be paying more attention to speed cameras, than we are to the road ;)

Use it while you can, you never know when it maybe your last chance

If was any of my ex girlfriends, I'm sure they'd be well impressed with a Micra :run:

Seriously, I don't care what opinion other people have of me by the car I drive. I drive my cars because I want to, because I think they're fun, nothing else.

As for racing others, most of the time, they're not worth bothering with anyway, I just let them go, in the sure and safe knowledge that I could have beaten them any time I wanted to.

Normally the only time I get next to someone who I really want to show the way to, I find that I'm driving the motorhome

It all depends on how you view the Supra....

I do understand where you are coming from totally. A car is to be used. I'm not suggesting it should wrapped up in cotton wool!

I just think using it every day to get to work when I am mostly stuck in traffic and half asleep in the morning and just want to get from A to B is a waste. Similarly using it to get to the shops and back, likewise.

A car has a finite life, why waste it on the mundane...

I have no problems doing the 30k miles in the supe, but I want them to be on my terms, when it suits me, when I can enjoy it the most.

100 miles a week in an old crapper is 100 miles to be done in the supe on the weekend for pure pleasure only, now that's what I'm talking about :D

Another thought - I had to buy a car that was beyond my power expectations as I kept killing the small economical cars. Thrashed them to death to get every ounce of power out of them.

That stopped when I got the Supra and so did the repair bills!

It's not just about costs and things it's about practicality as well... Geoff- do you put your dog in the Supe?

I could never have the supe as a daily car, it wouldn't get 1 meter down the track to the horses field, I'd get about 1 sack of feed in it and the mud and filth that my Rover is covered in... jut couldn't cope with that in and outside of the supra!!

It does work out far cheaper in my experience. Running the SUpra daily means higher mileage so more frequent servicing, tyres, wear and tear not forgetting petrol! I can't imagine how skint I'd be if ran one every day like I do the Rover. Plus I get cheaper insurance because I don't drive it much :)

My Rover rocks.
