42" HDTV, Which one

Hey All,

I am looking at getting a new TV and have narrowed it down to the following two, I prefer the LG as it has side mounted speakers and is finished in a nice piano black surround but the Hitachi has a very similar spec with higher native res for less money.

What would you choose :-

Always a toughy.... I bought a Hitachi 42DP7200 as a xmas prezzie for myself. I spent a good day on the net searching and comparing spec's but it all comes down to the individual. I went to richer sounds and they very nicely lined up the tv's next to each other with a HD demo disc in so i could compare pic quality against them... And I ended up with the Hitachi....

I did have another thought too, pic surely depends on the person, same as music, ie people have different opinions on treble and bass etc. All peoples eyesight is diferent and their colour perception.

Good luck with which ever one you buy, Im loving mine:clap:

I have looked into the Panasonic in a bit more detail and it does look like a good screen but the LG offers higher contrast ratio of 5000:1 compared to the Panasonics 3000:1, what does this really mean.

The manual for the Panasonic is available here :-

Contrast ratio

When referring to a display, the contrast ratio is a figure used to measure the luminance difference between the brightest white and the darkest black. The contrast ratio will be listed as y:z where 'y' is the brightest white and 'z' is the darkest black. An example of a standard contrast ratio for computer monitors and LCD displays is 200:1, a number higher than this, such as 600:1, will have a brighter display.

Alot of the stats mean nothing. I have a Panasonic PWD6 which is only an SD panel, but the quality of the screen is so good (compared to others in its class, which which would supposedly claim higher specs) its barely different from an HD panel running 720p HD, in fact you'd struggle to tell at all.

The most important thing about buying this sort of kit is to not rush into it and do plenty of homework. You'll find pretty much all you need on av forums but you'll need to do a fair bit of reading! I did and thats why I ended up with the screen I have!

So does that mean the LG should have a better picture, or more depth?

It should do, but then again it isnt as simple as that. Its also about refresh rates (response times), Brightness, Resolution - better to have a look at these screens yourself in curry's, comet before you buy (most of these numbers could just be marketing bollocks)

Most of these LCD are'nt very good at producing a decent picture from sources such as SKY OR terrestrial TV.

I personally found the Samsung and the Phillips(high-end) ones to be top notch at this.

Thats right Plasma :)

Was looking on avforums and looks like a couple of people have had faults on the LG 42PX5D, just trying to find some info on the Pan TH42PV500.

I like the record to memory card feature :)

If you have the space, and can be sat far enough away to appreciate it I dont think you can buy any better for the money. I spent a long time evaluating the options, plasma, LCD, DLP etc and could not fault the Samsung. Connections are also excellent I have dvd, playstation, video, sky and a multi-media wireless PC plugged directly into it.

Thats the one!!! One of THE best screens out there at the moment

It has a low pixel resolution.

Most of the Sony ones are 13** x 7**

Just been looking in Harrods yesterday, the 42 inch screens are huge :D and the prices are coming down. The one I saw for £15k is now only £9995 :D

I have a hitachi 42 plasma. its 1024x1024 display gives 95% screen coverage on 1080 signals, which i use for all sources via a scaler. Budget for a scaler also unless you want to wait for skys 1080 box in a few months time and replace your dvds on blue ray or HD dvd.

S-vhs via a 1080 scaler looks a load better then my component dvd straight in on prog scan. Thats surprised me.

Plasmas and scalers, its both or nothing.

If you haven't already, you have the option of then upgrading your dvd player to one with a built in scaler and wait for the sky 1080 box.

At last the west if catching up with japans Muse Laser discs from the late 90's (and USA's D-vhs) with 1080 picture and uncompressed sound. This is what blueray and hd-dvd hope to achieve in a cost effective and compact media format.

If judging with your eyes, which is the only way IMO, make sure your are watching a 1080 source as all shall be this way soon.

I am delighted with my Hitachi, I found the pioneer a bit severe with the contrast, personally the Hitachi seemed more natural, alough mine is a different and more expensive model to the one shown. Good Luck
