SoundWave
Tonight driving back home when I noticed that the whistle the turbo normally makes was a LOT louder than normal. I took it easy for a bit and as soon as there is any boost is makes a loud whistling noise which sounds like it could be coming from the BOV. I think it seemed to be performing ok (ive only had it 3 weeks so still getting used to it) and I only have the standard facelift boost gauge so cant give exact boost figures. Any thoughts? Could it be because it was so cold (outside) that the air was just making a louder noise? It didnt sounds like the 'death whine' but it was *very* loud and it is possible that the 2nd turbo wasnt kicking in - it was a bit too busy to boot it and I was quite worried about doing any damage. The noise happened even at slow speeds as soon as there was any boost. Its a 96 j-spec auto.
Pixelfill
I don't know for sure, and someone more knowledgable should be able to give a more accurate answer. I suspect it could be because of the really cold weather, therefore denser air into the turbos. but as I say don't take me as gospel as I know nothing.... hopefully this will it to someone elses attention Mike
Scoboblio
My turbos whistle much louder in the cold too.... didn't have any impact on the boost though. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=48650
Branners
j-spec turbos tend not to get the death whine, they just disintegrate and stop making any noise at all. Thats not to say they cant do the death whine, they just tend not to. It could just be due to the cold weather the car is pushing more boost but tricky to say for certain. SoundWave
It happens with any boost at all. Even going at 30mph, makes a loud whistle, almost as if it was coming from the BOV
wez_p
guess you'd need a boost gauge on there to be sure whether there was boost leaking through the BOV or a pipe etc my 96 auto TT also sounds alot louder when it's nice and cold. i asked the same question on here when i first got mine & heard it for the first time! i've now got a boost gauge telling me things are A-OK for peace of mind
imi
mine whistles a lot, been doing it for 2 years now.
SoundWave
It used to whistle a lot too and it sounded nice and cool. This just suddenly got louder in the course of a journey and sounds awful! Almost like someone blowing a whistle on the outside! After a quick trip last night I have a feeling the 2nd turbo isnt kicking in either.. Does that mean one of the valves (IACV) is stuck?
SoundWave
Just a thought, is the boost level on my Blitz turbo timer going to very acurate? Excuse my stupidity but I dont know how they work!
toyotasuprauk
I dont know much about turbos but it does sound like boost leak have you checked all the pipes for damage etc?
SoundWave
I just went out in it again and had a listen. It does sound like a whistle as air is escaping. There is some oil around the BOV which could be new (I've havent looked at it very closely before now) so I think there may be a leak there. Is it going to do any damage if I drive it like it is? (I wont boot it!) Im going to need to drive it to a garage... Can anyone recommend one in the Bournemouth or Southampton area?

wkdtime
faulty BOV? can u swap with someone and try that. most likely a leaking boost.
VIL
I have a similar problem although I have not had time to get itfully checked out. Basically as soon as I start to hit boost I get a loud `whine` that you can hold if you keep the revs constant, as soon as you give it a bit more gas the whine stops? Is this something similar to what you have experienced? I have posted threads in the past on the forum and it has been into a well respected garage for this problem but still no joy on its diagnosis. Some suspect pipes where changed but it has not made any difference to the noise?
SoundWave
Vil, this noise occurs at any time there is boost and just gets louder if you give it more gas. It does sound like air leaking from somewhere. Just need to find a decent local garage to have a look at it because im guessing Mr T will be pretty expensive to just diagnose the problem! Pig
Dont go mr T. You need to get searching for your nearest performance tuners!
imi
Who cares what the turbo sounds (unless its the death whine) like if they are both kicking in fine and pushing the right power for the mods on the car.
SoundWave
Solved the problem. The screws on the bottom of the BOV had worked themselves a bit loose so air was escaping. Took it off, tightened them up and checked the seal on the connecting pipes and it all seems fine again now
