JohnA
Apparently GM is now adopting oil changes at 8500miles and aims for ZERO (150K miles seen as 'life') What next, disposable cars with sealed sumps?
tbourner
Almost all technology is becoming so cheap that it's cheaper to buy new than to repair. I used to work on a monitor repair line but now it's gone because the margin of average repair cost went above cost of new unit!! It's now pretty much the same price for a new printer as it is for a replacement ink cartridge!! Car's will go the same way I'm sure - they'll guarantee 99% of their cars won't require repair within 50k miles, but then should be replaced with a new one. Pete
I'm confused.... My Vauxhalls had a 10k mile oil change specified in the service book?!
Chiefgroover
Morris Marina sealed engines spring to mind.
toyotasuprauk
There are some GM cars that have huge, huge service interals already and have been around for some time. In the future oil changes will probably be a 20K mile thing and major services every 60K miles on all cars anyway and everyone will laugh at having at changing your oil every 5K miles. Digsy
I thought GM service intervals were up around 10,000miles already? And the service book interval for a Supra is 9000 miles, anyway.
Ian C
0 100,000 miles before a major service. Ace. I think there is an oil change or two before that though. -Ian
garethr
How about this for an oil change interval? http://www.amsoil.com/testimonials/409000.aspx Anyone fancy trying it on a Supra?

I knew they were high these days but not that high
Ian C
Is that based on Paul's VX? I knew they were high these days but not that high Probably not now that a Mercedes van drove into it and buggered off. -Ian
Digsy
Lucky Paul strikes again eh? He's had sooo much good fortune with that car...
MattSZ
I think some of the yank tanks gm builds had long service intervals Corvette C5 springs to mind, I think it was marketed with a 100,000 mile interval
Terminator
What I don't understsand is what has changed, because an oil's protective properties dramatically change over time/use in an engine. Surely the internal combustion engine has not been radically changed to illiminate oil changes. Sounds like a way to build in future sales. So in the future will we see, no oil cap and no drain plug and engines driven to destruction. I can see the oli companies taking to this too well. I think I would be drilling holes to get oil in and out.

Need4Speed
Some Cadillacs have a 100,000 mile oil change. I'll bet that's like VW diesels with their 10,000 mile interval - oil consumption of 1 litre per 1000 miles means the oil is constantly being changed!
