mawby
Can anyone tell me what this is? It has three pipes comming out of the top, and a couple out of the bottom. The reason I ask is I reported ages ago about a tapping noise comming from the engine somewhere, to which some people said it might be the autobox and I should get the fluid changed. Well it's just had a B service which includes changing the fluid and the noise is still there. However, I noticed when I got out of the car tonight that a very similar noise (which could well be the same noise but sounding different as the engine was off and I was out of the car!) was comming from the black box circled in red. I must have stood there for five minutes looking at it trying to figure out what it was, and it was still making the noise when I left it. As some of the pipes from this device seem to hook into the inlet manifold I wondered if this might also account for the high boost I got the other day? Any ideas? Please don't say it's anything serious, either that or say it'll be covered by my J.I.C. warrenty!
mawby
This photo shows it a lot clearer.
JamesG
It's the charcoal cannister, which absorbs petrol vapour to avoid having to vent it to the atmosphere (for emissions). I think it's normal for it to make a bit of a noise. Can't say I've ever heard mine though. James.
mawby
Cheers mate. Now I know what it's called I've used the magical search button and found this, which seems to indicate the noise is quite normal. So maybe it's not this I hear from the inside... but the sound was very similar so maybe it is. Could this have an affect on turbo pressure if it was slighly blocked, as the said thread suggests it might also be used for pressure relief? Suprash
Mawby, I can hear mine when the engine is switched off, but cant hear it at all when the engine is running.
Steve W
....Could this have an affect on turbo pressure if it was slighly blocked... Don't think so Mawbs.... ? ? It relieves/filters pressure built up in the TANK. (?) SO, as the pressure is let out it's filtered out by the charcoal (?) MAY have miniscule rise in Fuel pressure if blocked (? ), but that wouldn't do squiddly to boost levels ? OR, that could be complete T*SS ? !
