Rear shocks knackered

The car has started making a bad knocking noise, I thought it was the infamous boot rubbers at first but last night it started to get much worse. Sounds like there's a couple of golf balls rolling around in the wheel well. (there's not, I checked :))

I took the OS rear wheel off just now and there's oil running down the shock, lots of it, looks like it's been leaking for quite a while judging by the amount of crap stuck to it.

The main body of the shock is yellow and says "Toyota Bilstein" on it, is this the OE one?

So what do I need? Just the damper insert thing that goes inside, correct?

Presumably I'll need to change both sides will I?

Any recommendations on what and where to buy?

I'm not going to be fitting these myself seeing as I don't have any spring compressors or a decent vice (several indecent ones though!) Spring compressors scare me anyway.

I thought that they were gas filled, so you shouldn't see any leaks. Mine were bone dry when they were dead.

You really should replace them in at least pairs.

Part numbers are :-

48510-09015 x 2 - Front Bilstien shocks

48530-09015 x 2 - Rear Bilstien shocks

Gas AND oil aren't they? Thanks for those part numbers Steve, are those for the std OE ones? Where can I get them from, Toyota dealers only or from a motor factors ?

Where did you get yours? Remember how much they were, approx?

thanks mate

I thought they were just gas, but I don't know. Mine were well and truly dead and there was no visible oil - perhaps it had already all gone

Those are the Toyota part numbers for the original yellow Bilstiens, I think they are about £150 each from Toyota and will take a week or two to get in.

Perhaps time to talk to CW and get his full kit and setup....

That's odd, the one I just took off says "48530-720d" on it.

That is not a valid Toyota part number, the first part, the PNC is correct for a rear shock, but the second section should also be 5 digits.

There is nothing listed in the EPC starting 720 (or anything like) either.......

Are you sure it's yellow and Toyota Bilstien?? Could it be a TRD one, but they are Grey as far as I know and their part codes are in Toyota format (not in EPC nor on normal Toyota systems though)

yes it's definitely yellow and says "Toyota Bilstien" on it. I'll just order a pair of 48530-09015 if you're sure they're the right ones.

I took the strut off but couldn't see anything wrong with it other than the leaking oil, so I swapped it with the one on the other side. The knocking is now coming from the passenger side so it's definitely that strut which is causing the problem. Not too happy about having to wait up to 2 weeks for the replacement though. :(

What happened with the rear Veilside spats? did you have to hand them back?

I've still got them at the mo but I know Mr E wants them back. The full kit is in my garage waiting for Dude to fit me in.
