Do you leave your modem/router/other gubbins switched on all the time?

(first use of the word 'gubbins' in a thread title?!) :)

I've got...

1) One modem transformer + modem

2) One router transformer + router

3) One speaker transformer

4) Another speaker transformer

5) One switch box transformer + switchbox

6) One printer transformer

...all sitting there permanently switched on. Do other people do this? Do I need to worry about heat buildup? (they are sitting under a desk behind one of the legs, with a PC infront of them further restricting the airflow around them).

I was thinking about getting some sort of box with a fan to put them all in so they were in a constant stream of cold air, but wasn't sure if I was panicing or not over nothing. There was a story in my local paper the other week about a flat that got burnt out because of a computer that had been on for 4 years (well, that's what the paper said) and it got me thinking. I don't keep my PCs switched on all the time but everything else is sitting there waiting to be used because I can't be arsed to switch them on at the plug and/or wait for the cable modem to sort itself out with the connection every time.

The bird in the couple who we were going to share a house with is a control freak when it comes to switches. She told us that when we live together she will DEMAND that ALL plugs are switched off AND unplugged every night and every time we leave the house!!!!

We're not going to share a house with them any more.

Her dad was a fireman and always used to tell her of the ammount of fires he'd been to where plugs had caused it. Funny cos I'm a HDD test engineer but I don't go around saying all hard drives break really easily!!

Anyway. You should have air flow around any electrical stuff, so maybe you need to move or get a fan blowing on them, but it's not as important as people make out I'm sure (just companies covering their backs telling you to switc off etc.).

I use a 6-way gang for all my PC stuff, and each socket has it's own switch. I always switch off all the sockets when not in use, but then the PC only used a couple of times per week. It's no hardship, because I cleverly positioned the gang where I could get to it easily. I'm not so worried about overheating, but it's probably good practise...and it saves 'leccy. Might be a trivial quantity, but it adds up.

My media pc downloads 24-7 but the temps are always kept low. The only problem I did have was that I burnt out the linksys router power pack, it used to get bloody hot! After it went I have put a higher ampage one in and it's allot cooler.

Surely running a fan 24/7 to cool all the transformers down will only make you worry about the fan burning out instead of the transformers?

I'm no electrical expert but wouldn't changing the transformers to higher ampage ones solve your hot transformer problem?

I have underclocked it so I can just run a heat sink, and uses a 5400 disk so NO PSU fan. @150W its low power so its silent and cheap to run.

What a bizarre idea. I guess if you want quiet then it's a way to go. Have you seen the mahoosive sinks with all the fins?

I leave a fair bit of kit on as well 24/7, all in the same room, toasty in winter :D

1 x athlon64PC, in full server tower with 7 fans pulling air through the case. 5 HDD all 7200 SATA, 2 monitors giving 3200x1200. ADSL is connected 24/7 as well. all running through 2 x surge protected strips. PC has only been down for about 2 hours total since october 2004, just for adding HDD and other gfx card.

1 big screen tv, 3 sat receivers, 4 vcr and hifi as well. (in standby overnight, unless in use)
