Jake
How can I tell which cam cap goes where? In Tony License's How to:- Valve Stem Seal Replacement guide it says the caps are "stamped with their number on top, along with an arrow that points towards the front of the engine" but mine aren't! Mine have letters on them rather than numbers and some are the other way around to most of them. There's no arrows on them indicate the correct orientation. It just doesn't look right to me. Should I just refit them in the same order they came off ? Thanks for any help.
uk-rich
assuming the engine has not been in bits before, and you know the order they came off in, back in the same order
Soonto_HAS_soop
Looking at your photo and Tony's how to, his seemed to have letters and not numbers, and I think that I can see some faint arrows on the centre (raised area) on some of your caps. F, 1 up from the bottom on the left seems to have an arrow shape in the centre area.
TLicense
I'm sure they have numbers on as well (Probably the one thing I didn't get a picture of - typical!). Maybe stamped onto one of the side faces. E1, E2, E3 etc, I1 I2 I3.... I vaguely remember them being quite faint. Give them a real good clean up in some oil and see if you can make anything out. Dammit, I'm gutted that I didn't take a picture of it. I'm quite close to gettting the spanners out... then again it is bloody cold. Sorry Jake! In fact the more I think about it I'm pretty certain they had numbers on.
TLicense
Yep found it. It's in the middle on the raised bit, you can just make it out on this inlet number 1 bearing cap. It reads I1 .:-

Chris Wilson
Soak them in cellulose thinners or acetone to clean them, looks like that engines done a few miles! Or the oil hasn't been changed regularly.

Or the oil hasn't been changed regularly. It was due an oil change but the engine has done less than 40k miles.
