Hmm, well I was only half watching it, but I thought I heard '633 Squadron' in there, rather than 'Battle of Britain' ?

Shit guy youve got me worried now....Ill have to watch it again tonight to check...maybe we are both right.

Anyone else think the Veyron looks like a circumcised squid ?

....the F1 was designed to be the ultimate car regardless of cost. That was the only design criteria. The Bugatti had to have 1000BHP, and had to go 250mph, and had to have a fancy double clutch sequential gearbox etc. It was designed as a marketing exercise to beat the F1s stats, not because that was the best way of doing things.

Absolutely agree 100%, and my top 100 cars still has the MacF1 at #1 spot - it's the perfect car IMO, in fact the Veyron comes in about 7 AFAICR after such (inferior) cars as an original GT40, Lambo Diablo and Aston V8 Vantage Le Mans.

Just your original post which (correctly) stated it would get nowhere near the position of the MacF1 if it gave it a 0-120mph headstart that isn't really the point, it's just a way of showing how much faster it is in a straight line (you're going to quote my 'in a straight line' now and say "Exactly!!" aren't you! :p ).

Yeah that's right. I wonder how long a Supra would take to empty its tank at Vmax. The marketing stat I hate about the Veyron though is that one that Clarkson trotted out saying that if you give a McLaren F1 a head start and wait until it's doing 125 you will have caught up by 200. You will both be doing 200 at the same time, but up until that point the McLaren will still be pulling away. And after then you're only going to be catching slowly. So its not anywhere near as impressive as it sounds.

Sounds familiar :)

Missed it and couldn't find Top Gear on teletext to see what time it was

Not you again!

You both missed the point, nobody's claiming it will 'overtake' the F1 after giving it a 100mph headstart, I don't even think anyone's assumed that (have they?), but it'll do 0-200 and the MacF1 from the same standing start will probably only get to about 160 odd in the same time (guessed figure), that's bloody impressive however you cut it!! :whip:

I was REALLY looking forward to this one, seeing more of the Veyron etc.

But was was dissapointed. They never showed what it could do on the track OR the road (a friend did the same journey as Clarkson faster......... in a bloody Volvo!). I was hoping something similar to that Bentely speedo shot in Dubai followed a power lap.

Btw, given the inferior drag co of .36 vs 0.32 for a Supra, a 1000hp Supra would eat it. ;) And, unlike other supercars, speed is its only trump card, given the huge weight.

As for the McLaren F1, it can do its 230+mph anytime, this maxs out a little past 220mph in 'normal' mode. F1 1 Veyron 0.

Haha I'm your nemesis :)

I say that it's worded to make people think it'll overtake, not that they claim it will overtake - us clever bods know differently don't we ;)

Anyway. As people have pointed out, the Veyron appears to be a bit of a mutant marketing exercise that the poor engineers have had to cobble into life. No sports car weighs two tons and needs six cooling systems. It's a damn shame really, and I watched that video that Todd posted and it was really, well, uninspiring. Sounded like they were shifting at 4000rpm, if that's what it sounds like at full chat then

Mac F1 all the way

Yeah I thought that, every time it got on the straight I was itching for it to keep reving, and it just didn't! That can't be redline surely?

OK, this may be in french but looks like the guy got to put the car through a more "spirited" drive than clarkson did.

it's back on the 27th me thinx

Correct

There is no Top Gear next week, because some men are playing with each others balls or something. It's a sport thing apparently. We will however be back on December 27 to bring motoring festive fun to your life once more.
