stylieee
anyone know if fitting 255 wide tyres on 8.5" wide wheels would be ok? i've found a good price on some michelin pilot sports, but its the only size i can get.
Ian W
should be fine with a 255 mate. (just remember to reduce the aspect ratio to keep the rollin radius as close as possible)
Lucifer
They will fit, but they are not designed to go on that size rim.
Ian W
I would agree that the stock tyre width is only 245 but surely unless you're talking about the stock 16s (which were obviously designed with a 245 in mind) then you can't say that an 8.5j wheel isn't 'designed' to take anything larger...... i mean, for a certain width of wheel there can be a number of tyre widths that you can use as many members on here probably do. correct me if i'm wrong though.... Stock 17's tyre width is 235 on 8.5 fronts and 255 on 9.5 rears
Ian W
Stock 17's tyre width is 235 on 8.5 fronts and 255 on 9.5 rears if you're sticking to stock sizes yes, but how many people will put something wider on a rim that width?
Tom
I personally wouldn't, a 255 on a 8.5 rim is too wide, I'm sure it'll screw the grip/handling and tyre wear
Ian W
i don't know really, but would like to find out for sure as i was thinking of putting 255s on my 18s (which are 8.5j)... only had 245s on it up until now....
Tom
hows the tyre wear on them? and is this 8.5 all round???
Ian W
tyre wear seems fine mate, and yeah they're 8.5j all round (i know the rear should be wider but the guy who had the car before me put these Lenso GM's on and they only went up to 8.5j)... ps my car's an N/A. Lucifer
Like I said , Never disigned to take a tyre that width and still handle properly.

Lucifer
NO your not worng, They will fit, but it wont be a particularly well handled car after it. Although TBH, youd have to be picky to notice it, but I guess depends on your goals.
Ian W
well, if the car's not going to handle any better i'll probably go with whichever size i can get at the best price.......probably the 245s. i've just had a check on mytyres.co.uk and they've got 245/40R18 Eagle F1s for £120 a piece. anywhere cheaper than that d'you reckon? merckx
should be fine with a 255 mate. (just remember to reduce the aspect ratio to keep the rollin radius as close as possible) Correct, they're fine! I've got them on mine - 255/35 18 I really need wider tyres and wheels, 285's would be nice!
Guest plymouthfury
the diference between 245 and 255 is 10mm across the tread pattern and not necesarily (cant spell ) at the beading where the tyre meets the rim. the very worst will be a little more or less flex dependant on increasing or decreasing tyre diametre and that can be adjusted to a point by increasing or decreasing the tyre presure, i used to mess around like this when racing. i used to run 205 on 8j rims as it made the tyre wall more ridged and reduced flex. hardest tyre i could find with the most rigid tyre wall possible for drifting. if the wheel had a 245 fitted before then a 255 tyre will fit and be hardly noticable if at all. you would notice it over a timed distance on a race track for example but not on the road. chrsitine
