jackso11
I turned on my air con for the first time at the weekend, just to see how cold it is.....and it didn't make any difference. Anyone know what the problem is likely to be? Any checks I can do? I am pretty sure when I checked the car over before buying it I tried the air con and it was cold, but I have only had the car a couple of months and have not needed air con in this weather! I live in finsbury park, london. So if anyone is close by and thinks they may be able to find an answer let me know please. Cheers, Adam
SteveR
Probably needs re-gassing. I've been told that in most (all?) cars you should run the aircon for at least 10 mins (preferably more like 30) every month to keep various part slubricated and prevent leaks - don't ask me spefics cos I don't know and it could well be be cobblers. Sounds like yours has either leaked it's aircon gas, or the gas itself has gone 'off' and doesn't work properly any more- which does happen after a few years. Either way a re-gassing place will be able to tell you without too much trouble - just shop around for a good price.

jackso11
Any ideas on a rough price for re-gas? So I know what to aim for when shopping around. I have never had this done before so have no idea how much I should aim to pay.
afreemason
Motley had hers done at Hallcraft near stourbridge ....... absolutely no use to you in terms of getting it done but they will give you a guideline price having done a Supe before, albeit an NA. They're on the net, google "hallcraft" Sorry I can't remember what it cost but I was more worried about the cost of the service and re-spray at he time  PS - ditto to the above comments - exactly what we were told ! JohnA
You do have the temp knob fully-cold, right? (sorry, but I had to ask) Also if the temp outside the car is below 5C or something the ECU may stop it from engaging. (not sure exactly on the supra, but other cars refuse to get it going below 4C for self-protection from frost) Re-gas could anything between £50 and £
SupraStar 3000
toyota cost £100 to re-gas

jackso11
Is that right about the outside temp. stopping the aircon working? could it be that? Temp guage is on lowest setting!
zap
My local MOT station charged me £50 for a re-gas and complete system check, done it all with some portable machine, seems fine now. Interesting point as well, everytime I switched my aircon on it smelt strange in the car, like stale water, turned out to be a blocked drain pipe underneath the car which runs off the excess condensation when the aircon is working. jackso11
hmm. Haven't noticed any smells in my car. Anyone on here know a good place in/near london to get this checked? Cheers.
jackso11
I have noticed that when I press the air con button the light comes on but there is no change in the engine noise, rev needle doesn't move.....there should be some change right? Does this mean I need a new motor on the aircon?

Need4Speed
How old is the car? If it's got Freon (R12) you'll need a conversion kit to take the newer R134a gas. Freon was banned some years ago. The trick is never to turn the a/c off - it not only cools the air, it dehumidifies it so you'll never mist up the screen etc. Good in winter.
