how many people work for themselves?

Yep I do, what is it, primarily information security (Compliance, Intrusion Detection, Policies etc) and this is typically a 2 to 3 day assignment each time.

Difficulties - getting work direct with clients. 99.9% is through other security comapanies that sub contract to me. Why is this, because the clients like to have the perceived security of trading with PWC, Computacenter, software vendors et el.

Do I like working for myself - YES

Downsides - Where's the next piece of work coming from and when. Plus a typical day involves 5-6 hours travel plus 8-9 hours actual work and paperwork - ie records that you need to keep, accounts etc.

Own rewards

Flexitime (but see below)

Potential £'s

Cash Flow

Hard work - 24/7

No holidays / sickness allowed

Red Tape Tax/legislation

STAFF

...did I mention STAFF?

Not regretted the change - but sometimes the responsibility for every stage of the business can be too much. Also I earned more as an ops director with a blue chip...

I only responsible for myself - great...!

I left my last company about 5 years ago and most of the customers followed. My boss (partner really.. was just me and him) was moving from IT into Car Leasing so it worked out okay. Self-discipline is a tough one. You get invited to lots of christmas partys if you're on your own, which is good. Money & cashflow can be a serious stressor. I'd go back to working for someone if they were to pay me tripple what I earn now, but not for any less.

 , but the downside of working from home on a computer is that you just browse the net instead of doing work!

Not when you are up to arse in alligators mate...and if you want to eat / pay mortgage / feed kids etc etc...

Believe me - no time for fecking about then...

Working for yourself and employing others is damn hard work...with no guarantees at the end of it...

Anyone who goes for it deserves a shedload of :respekt:

As said before making sure enough work is coming in is an issue and also the amount of time spent on paperwork was a shock to me but as said before better than having someone telling you what to do.. (except customers that is;) )

Oh - and the bank manager...inland revenue...vat...employment tribunals...

:)

Lots of benefits, brilliant in good times, scary in bad times (although not seen them for a few years now).

Wouldn't go back to having a boss unless really pushed.

we used to sell them as well,

my better half has run her own company for about 7 years there are good times and then there are really bad times.i work for a company so we have my wage as a steady income which covers the bills.

bad points,working 24/7

will you be paid(once lost 55k):drown:

also you do get sick of people saying you must be loaded and forgetting the above.

worth it? difficult to get into? did you start a trade you were already trained in or what?

Run a small graphic design and multimedia consultancy - trained as a graphic designer and have been doing it ever since college. Easy? Starting a business is dead easy, its keeping it going thats the difficult bit! You fancy going it alone then?

I have had my record company 15 years, started it from scratch, no loans, nowt.

High points are being able to have a stupendous record collection (owned by the company, not me of course), work where and when I want, people kissing my ass.

Low points are having to fire people (not just people, but so-called 'friends') for nicking, losses (one of my creditors went bust owing £50k, very nearly made me bust too) and having jealous people unjustly slagging me & my business (wankers).

To run your own business you have to be a jack of all trades, master of ONE, and that ONE is you have got to love the core thing that your business represents - obviously for me that's records. Suits me fine

I do work for myself 15 years + now fitting flash bathrooms & sorting out everyones plumbing & heating needs so now if you need a plumber you know who to call.

Funny you say that. Our pipes are making a horrendous noise when the toilet is flushed. It's really really bad but my mum says she can't afford a plumber right now. It's so bad that I don't like to flush the toilet at night because it must upset my neighbour. Any ideas? Sometimes I grab onto the pipe feeding the toilet and pull/tug/wiggle it and it might help a bit.
