DaveM
Last weekend I fitted an HID Headlight kit to my supra and I am not sure whether they are working correctly or not. When I switch the headlights on the bulbs flash and then go off again. If I leave them switched on (with bulbs not lit) for 30 seconds or so, switch the lights off and then on again, the bulbs light up and work fine. Once up and running the lights stay lit and are excellent. I am slightly worried as I have my MOT at the end of this month and I'm not sure if they will pass working like this. I have read elsewhere on the forum about HID headlamps needing to "warm up" so is this how HID headlights are supposed to work or have a got a problem somewhere. merckx
They should illuminate straight away, but it takes a second or two for them to give full brightness!
Paul
Yeah, they come on and then take a few secs to get to full brightness. Shouldn't go off and have to switch them off then on again? Paul
ManwithSupra
maybe a ballast problem
Alex
Mine initial give a burst of light, then go down to a less bright beam then warm up to give full intensity...definately don't go OFF in the middle though. Which kit have you got?

Jake
Hey Dave, I just saw something on SF that might be of interest : *HID's on the blink..Here's the Fix*** OK I have HID's in the Headlights and the Fog Lights...I recently started having a problem with them they would turn on ....and then before reaching full temp 1 or 2 would shut off.... FIX: Wire in a seperate Ground to the Car's Chassis of each Negative going to the Balast. Power and Negative ============= + [balast] from Car to Balast ============= - connect addl ground here ==== - (To Chassis) http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/9369/ballast20cn.th.jpg
DaveM
The Kit is one of the Phillips kit's so it should be fairly good quality. Someone else has suggested that it could be an earthing problem so another earth might be worth a try. I know some people who brought kits recently found that they had to switch one of the connectors around which I did not like the sound of so I decided to cut into the loom and cross the wires over using a piece of connecting strip. I think I may have to go back to leaving the connections as they were originally and swapping the plug around like others have done.
Jake
That was me that had to reverse the connector from the ballast to the bulbs. But that was on the 'XXenon' kit that Nic supplied, not a Philips one. Where did you get yours from Dave? When you say it's Philips do you mean just the ballasts? ChrisSZ
Do all HID kits take a few seconds to warm up then?? I'm asking because I have been considering fitting HIDs to my main beams (dips already done). I don't see it'll be much use if they take a few seconds to warm up though??? michael
I have the same issue as the original poster, I haven't bothered fixing it as yet but it drives me nutty at times. I'm told the best way to sort this is to power them directly using decent cable from the battery and relays, beyond me but this in conjuction with better earthing is supposed to do the trick. ChrisSZ
Mine are powered directly - the original wire is only used to switch them on/off with. They stip 'pop' on for a split second, dim and then, over the space of about 5sec, come to full brightness Other than that they are great - so much so that at present main beam doesn't make all that much difference (PIAA Extreme White bulbs in the main beams!!) :)
