You wont notice any difference between HD and a normal plasma ATM, this is because nothing is being broadcast in HD, there may be one or two HD dvd's knocking round but certainly very rare at present.

From my understanding there will be a board to slot into most of the 'decent' plasmas to make them HD compatible.

My advice get yourself a decent Panasonic Plasma Screen... but if you wanna splash the cash Panasonic do a gorgeous HD screen - my old man has just bought one.

One more piece of advice, dont skimp on the scart leads and other cables... you pay for what you get... Gold Scarts all round! Luckily my old man works in the business so knows these things inside out...

Keep us posted on what you decide!

most plasmas made within the last 24 months are allready HD ready,

its coorect that in the Uk were not transmitting in hd yet, however it will be with us within 18mnths ;)

its also good to note some hd dvd players have been here quite a while,

its getting the hd dvd`s that are the problem,. ;)

You'll definately notice the difference m8.

You'll need a HD signal first tho, ie from sat/cable/HD-DVD, and you certainly will on PS3/X-Box 360, and they broadcast in the highest HD signal, but your current range of Plasma TVs wont be able to show that.

You CANNOT make a non HD Plasma/LCD panel HD compatible

There are alot of myths and confusion about HD.

Unless you are willing to pay in excess of £50per month for sky (£42.50per month + £££ HD premium) then there is no point going for HD. HD is only going to be available from sky (unless you have a Astra1/Hotbird satellite system) for sometime as sky are pioneering HD and own the rights for the format so far.

There will be a "freeview style" box released in years to come but this will only let you view the extra channels but not in HD quality. The HD channels are NEW channels and not your BBC1,BBC2 etc.. in better quality. These will come with time but not for a while.

You will find with that at present a good quality non-HD panel will give you a much better picture than any HD panel as were we dont have the Picture quality needed to give the HD panels good pictures at present. Most of the sources we have, inc DVD are nearly half the resolution that HD requires leaving noise/grainy effects on all pictures for example...

Typical non-HD panel resoltion 852x500, New HD panels range from 1366x700 to 1966x1366 (or similar) there is a massive difference and unless you can give these sets the picture quality/resolution they need then the pictures are poor. At the moment HDpanels are like having a Big Single Supra with no wheels, useless

But when HD comes out Via sky then the pictures will blow the competion away. Dvd also doesnt come up to scratch thats why they will be releasing Blu-Ray DVD which is HD quality.

I hope this helps

Telewest have HD coming out next year too, its not exclusive to Sky.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD are the new super DVD techs. Blu ray will own.

Far, goto Harrods and check out the 50 inch HD plasma they have there for £7.5k or the 60 inch one for £15k :D

I didnt say it was exclusive to Sky just that they own the rights as they are pioneering HD, but i dont deal with Telewest so i wasnt aware of that.

 Pioneer do one of, if not the best, 50" HD plasma on the market and you can pick it up for under 4k. But as Bobbeh said best bet is to go and see a HD picture as lots of stores have them to view.

If you want a good price for screens http://www.pixmania.co.uk has a good reputation and are not far off my trade prices including VAT!!!

Its been out in the US and in some European countries for a couple of years now, I'm not sure about them owning the rights as such as its not their technology - did they pay more to be the first provider of ir or something? Sky are just investing more in it than the others right now for the UK launch, its nice to see someones taking the risks over here.

Thanks for all the info peeps - I have been reading up on this and it seems HD will future proof, there seems to be a 20% increase in picture quality against non HD and like people have suggested not much HD transmition is happening at the moment. Some websites even suggest that a good quality non HD eg Panasonic/Sony/Pioneer will out perform el-cheapo HD.

Price difference wise there seems to be about £350-£ 500 difference.

Lots of useful info here
