my mate was mad about Integrales, then he had a fad for those exact same LHD M3's, initially he raved and raved about it - after a short while of being last in the pack, guess what, he went back to the Integrale. Like Ian R said, get an Evo if what you want is a great drivers car and you still don't want a supe

Ive test driven a couple of Supras

So you're not exactly in the best position to question its handling abilities.

No doubt the M3 is a good performer, but they're outclassed by the Supra.

What exactly are you wanting it for? Daily driving? or are you a serious track addict.

Sounds to me like you cant afford a Supra so are just trying to justify getting the M3, go for it, you'll have fun whatever one you get. :)

I enjoyed reading this thread. Three test drives and you are an expert on MKIV's. Nice one.:stickpoke As for your other choice, it is a very dated looking car, even worse it is a german tank. Just looks like a chaved/maxed family car, at least it will blend in with everything else in car parks.

You may regret this purchase in the near future:faint:

I had driven a few stock mkiv supras in the past and I admit that I was underwhelmed.

Now that I own one it's different. Looking back, the main reasons they all felt sluggish were:

1. long auto gearing. good for cruising at 120mph, liability in the dry when doing 0-60

2. general auto's desire to go into the highest possible gear (for safety and fuel economy)

3. the torque-converter effect that makes it feel like it's slipping at low revs

4. not knowing about the kick-down switch (not that I would use it easily during test-drives)

Once you learn how to use the car/gearbox things are different.

Much different.

it is german-so built very well, but it isn't a supra. Yes, the m3 has character and is built like a tank, but, it hasnt got the sleekness, sexyness and class the supra has got. When you drive down the road in a m3 kids arent really going to stop and stare whereas in a supra, they are gobsmaked at the elegant curves and sheer road presence.

My view anyway, but, as everyone says, each to their own.

Before I bought my Supra , I was in a similar position to Matt here - couldn't really afford the Supra so I thought I'd go for something with performance but with renowned reliability - help me save a bit of money. I dropped £8k on an E36 328i.

Was quite happy with it to start with - was my first RWD car, so I had a bit of fun with it. It was no M3, but the 328 was no slouch and I learned a lot about driving RWD in it.

Unfortunately, I'd only had it for 18 months or so before I noticed that I was burning oil at a horrible rate. Long story short, the valve stems were knackered. Eventually found out this was a "standard problem" on the early 328's and that the engine couldn't be fixed and would need replacing!

The car ran for another 6 months and then blew up. Literally. Flames, sirens, hoses - the works.

Two weeks after the insurance money came through I picked up the Supra ('93 - 2 years older than the beemer - 70k miles - 'bout the same as the beemer). Early days yet (3 months or so), but the Supra is running sweetly, even with me abusing it as an everyday, cold weather toy!

Don't want to put Matt of the BMW - mine was an early E36, so I guess that contributed to the design flaw, but let the buyer beware who trusts in the German car = reliable "myth"!

Good luck with whatever you decide, Matt!

Lol, i had my heart set on one, hence the posts and membership. Never know i may get one in a few years time.

Has that thing got drum brakes on the rear or just reeeeelly really small discs?

Not too bad looking actually, and I'm still quite impressed by that yellow DTM newer shape M3 that slaughtered the american Supra in the popular vid.

I like the E30 M3, nice looking and I like the fact it's pretty small for a bmw, but seriously it really is almost impossible to tell how good a car is till you have it for a while imo, I'm still learning the capabilites in mine and my mini took around a year till I new exactly what it could do, go with what your heart says, such a shame they didn't make a rhd version! although I've seen converted ones about.

I'm sorry but I personally think that the beemer looks pants. I don't know how it drives but being a left hooker is gonna be a real pain in the ass. Maccy D's and the car park are avoidable and the least of your worries.

Clubbing the knuckles in on your left hand every time you whack it on the door card when you reach for the gear stick on the wrong side is a begining. Finding it incredibly difficult to ever overtake on a standard single carriageway road would concern me more. Not really being able to see whats going on in front of me in traffic would also be a bigger priority for me. Just generally being on the wrong side of the road for the car setup would just bug the tits off me.

I would have thought that a better classic in the german dept would be an original audi quattro and a far better drive than an old beemer. Supes are going in the TT dept for 6-8k now so they are more affordable than ever before. German reliability is no better than japanese and that particular car is a reflection of the 80's rather than a move into the nineties and beyond that similar era motors are.

Just my tuppenceworth. Thats from someone that is selling a supe so I'm not that biased.

I rarely overtake, if i was going to a carpark or MaccyD it would more than likely be with a passenger anyway, i guarantee you would quickly get used to the gearbox. I cant see it being too much of a hassle and no one i have spoken to with left hookers do either.

And IMO it looks awesome, old skool of course.

think thing is we dont likes bmw's?

Or could it be that it's a SUPRA club? ;)

Seriously Matt, unbiased opinions on a supra owners/enthusiasts club are going to be very few and far between :)

Personally, I hate 'old skool'; imho the past should bloody well stay in the past, and for a good reason. To be honest, I actually thought it was an escort the first time I saw the photo
