ellis
Am in dire need of help - my main hard drive has tried to commit hari kari - the b-tree catalogue has corrupted and I can't access the drive. Norton doesn't touch it, disk aid no joy. I need to retrieve some hugely important data (client files) which are worth a fortune to me. Have spoken to a data retrieval company and have been quoted quite a lot to retrieve data but am considering it. Am currently running File Salvage (very, very slow) but am after advice and help. HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

carl0s
You're a bit stuck with a Mac. I looked into cloning one recently, and none of the usual tools could do it (Acronis TrueImage, Ghost, DriveImage etc.). Furtunately, OS 9 can just be drag'n'dropped, and there are native cloning tools available for OS X. If you have absolutely no luck, I would say drop the drive in a Linux machine which has HFS filesystem support in the kernel and have a play from there. The freezer method hasn't ever worked for me, but it's always worth a go as an absolute last resort
Pete
Can you put the drive in a working machine to read the files off?

I've wanted to get into this business myself, but I'd have to get a job with one of the big boys for a few years 'cause there doesn't seem to be any real information about it out there. Nic
ellis have you tried using Disc Genius, I find that better than disc doctor. There is also Disc Warrior you could try. I have 'back up' copies of both if you want them, I'd need an FTP site to drop them on though as they are big files. What OS software are you using? If you are running latest 10.4 there is an option in system pref/start up disc, to choose to start you machine in Target Disc Mode, which allows you to connect your Mac by firewire to another mac and have it start up as an external disc drive. This way you can run the diagnostic software from the other mac. Alternatively you can burn a disc from the software I have and start up from the disc, or remove the HD from your mac and fit inside an external hard drive case then connect that to another mac. Give me a shout if you have any other questions and I will try to help.

Could still do with sending disc off - was quoted £900 to recover 115GB of data.
