Small oil leak??

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just been poking around under the bonnet of my car and noticed a bit of oil on top of the engine.

It seems to be coming from a hose that is connected to the top right of the engine (looking from the front).

Does anyone know what that hose is for? Is it something to worry about or is it just a case of a new hose/washer or something?

I havent got a camera so cant take a pic of it. There is only one hose on the top right anyhow.

Paul.

It's the PCV valve.

May want to take it out and just check it's working OK. IIRC they were about £12+vat from Toyota last time i checked. May want to just replace it as a matter of course.

It's not unknown for them to fail in a similar way to any car.

It's Positive Crankcase Ventilation, allows gaseous build ups in the crankcase or the cam covers to be vented off to the intake and then burn't off as part of the combustion process.

It's easily replaced, just remove the pipe and then pull on the end of the valve. Just watch the grommet when putting a new one back in, don't want it dropping inside.

It's not too easy to test as it's not a one way valve as such, but if you remove it and can only blow through it lightly one way then it is knackered.

Cheers Martin,

I hate it when I get a new car and dont know anything about it or it's engine.

I was like that with my first MR2, 4 years ago.

Hopefully I will come to more of the Supra meets though and absorb some knowledge :-)

You lot seem like a better laugh than the MR2 lot too ! :)
