How an I check if my turbos are running properly?

Hi,

I've had my car a few days now and I'm enjoying it :)

but I'm not as impressed with the performance of the car as I thought I would be.

Perhaps it's me driving it wrong as I'm not used to auto's?

Will I see a big increase in performance if I take the cats off and fit an induction kit and exhaust?

Also is there an easy way to check if the turbos are healthy and working easily??

Cheers,

Paul.

I think 1st turbo is 0.7 bar, then the 2nd kicks in and gives 0.8 bar between the 2 of them? Standing to be totally corrected!!!

Since you've got the auto - you are engaging Kick down yeah? pedal to the floor and then an extra push until it clicks?

With the overdrive off doesn't it hold on to the revs higher? so it should go a bit faster.... Again, only going on what I think I've heard! :D

As for what Thorin put - found out when I went to see mine its CAT-less :D woooohoooooo :D Should be a bit quicker than the standard TT I drove at JIC :D :D

Gordon - yeah I am aware - been doing a lot of searching!!! ;)

Thats part of the reason I'm going to fit a boost gauge straight away to check its ok :)

One question though - since the previous owner decat'd it - wouldn't he have had the same problem and had to fix it, or do they not boost spike in Japan? Can't see higher octane petrol stopping it spiking....................?

I can only tell you that some people do run more than 1.2 with no problems. Others run no cats on a jap TT and don't even make 1.2 bar.

Depends on the car.

From what I understand, It is safer to run more boost with higher octane fuel.

It's really a safety thing, and depends on how hard the car is driven.

1.5 bar on 95 oct on a track is asking for trouble.

(All as I understand it ;))

Like Martin advised, and you were already going to do, fit a boost gauge and then you'll know :)

You never really know the history of the car, but I wouldn't worry.

decat yes, but first Race Logic... shit.... Mr Duff threw me sideways today (thanks) with it on! changes the car totally for the better, you can push harder!

You are running .75 bar with both T's > try an exhaust change, air filter poss, decats. Standard stuff that won’t hurt the car but raises you to a safe 1.2 which is inter planetary speed!

good luck.;)

Paul..

that's ONE reason why I wanted to go 'Draggin' ASAP with mine !:p

I knew, once I got a 'fair' time, that the turbos MUST be OK ! !

could always time yerself ?:conf: (bit fuzzy but gives indication).

could let ME... sorry, I mean someone drive it for you:D

the main thing is, it should feel fairly 'sluggish' up to ~2,500-ish

EVEN WHEN TURBO 1 IS OK ! !

then at ~4,000 it should accelerate a LOT harder.

and YES, there IS quite a lot of LAG, so don't worry.

It's really a GT-feely car NOT 4-cyl 'revvy' feeling ? ? IYKWIM ?

ie. round tight town streets/roundabouts etc my old RS escort

was MILES quicker/more agile etc... but once on an open road/

doing 50 plus, there's NO CONTEST ! !

It's 'cos you had that MR2 (did say MR2 didn't ya ?)

before.... completely different feel.

FatS.

[ that's ONE reason a lot of peeps get/want the manual... let's

you keep it up in 'second-turbo' country easier...

if it feels better, you might need to use MANU to do the same ? ]

Get ya decat done with your big bore system (I prefer the Blitz NUR spec)...FCD, Dual Solenoid boost controller which also has built in boost gauge including peek hold.

The difference between stock and running 1.1 - 1.2 bar is like a different engine, but it really comes on song when pushing above 4500revs. Therefore keeping the gears down will give you more performance as you have a better chance of keeping the 2nd turbo on song with the revs higher.

I tend to drive with OD Off (unless on M/Way) and use 2nd when slowing down as gear braking.:flame Dev :flame Dev

If you use a boost controller, you won't gain power by removing both cats. I took both out and found the car virtually undriveable in the wet. I've since put the middle cat back in. I know this is a contraversial view but... unless all you do is quarter miles in the dry, consider being contraversial.

If you want a CW second cat removal pipe, I've got one, less than 1000 miles old - see me at Billing JAE.

Why was it undriveable?? you could always try not putting your foot on the pedal so hard!!

I took my car to Chris Wilsons this weekend for a check over and he gave it an 'OK', so I'm happy everything is as it should be now.

Next in the pipeline is a de-cat(both) and exhaust with a FCD. Thats about all I want to do to it really!

Oh and isnt manual mode great? Is it me or does the car rev quicker and change quicker too?? muchos funos.

Cool I understand what the man meant when he said it was not driveable yeah... If BrianD haddent had his RaceLogic on, his motor this weekend > along with me > would have flown off the road.. like mine did five weeks ago..!

It's not about being sensible, it's about being a nob and forgetting that at 4 thou the TT will kick you in the arse if you unawares or showing off etc.... In the wet it's a killer, especially if you drive like me, an old man in a young body going fast without glasses - stay away from Kent!lol;)

The serious place on this site is the techi bit right? Sometimes I wonder?

Best bet is to give him a ring mate. See what he says.

He is definately the man to get the car serviced with though. Never met a fairer or specialised mechanic before - he really knows his stuff.

If you goto Chris's, pop in. I'm only 25 mins up the road! :)

Hopefully he will be fitting de-cats, exhaust, boost guage and FCD in the very near future for me!!:flame Dev

Time you changed your signature - Traction control? That's your centre CAT!

:)

I find mine perfectly drivable in the wet with the stock TC switched off and no RLTC, thanks.
