FaithStalker Posted July 4, 2003 Share Posted July 4, 2003 After a lovelly Cambridge meet last night (Thu) there was nothing wrong with the Supra, gave it a bit of welly against ChrisR's GT4 all the way round to 140 leptons on our private test track... different matter this morning, i was really late for the train, so had to give it a bit of welly when it was cold, I got up to 121 leptons (overdrive was on, manu off) and the engine died, it dropped back a few 1000 revs and then picked up again......then died again!!!!! all boost was lost. I backed off, and accelerated hard , boost was up to stock levels (its a stock car) of 0.7 all the way round to 121 leptons, then death again no warning lights no flashing nothing as i am not a techie the only thing i can think of is its lost 4th Gear??????? could it be the box was very cold???? didnt like being worked hard ? i ran out of time and out of ...track... and had to park it and come to work, i'll test the 4th gear theory tonight using the MANU and OD buttons to engage and keep 3rd until PAST 121 (to see if its speed related) then try and engage 4th. crap crap crap any ideas? anything i can check??? (with my 0 knowledge of Supras) - any help will be much appreciated! theres no noises, no clangs, nothing, its just like you've let off the throttle..... anyone got Leons number? *SOB* anyone got a good Loan rate recently? Steve Cargill Posted July 4, 2003 Share Posted July 4, 2003 I think the gearbox gets from it's "I'm cold and haven't woken up yet" mode in a few seconds, so that should not have been an issue. When you hit 120, what revs were you doing, was it about 7k and didn't change up. You can test 4th at normal speeds, when cruesing just press the OD button and it should change down into 3rd and the revs go up accordingly. ChrisR Posted July 4, 2003 Share Posted July 4, 2003 Mate, this sounds like the limiter. When i got my Supra it was supposed to have been delimited however after 3 months of ownership i finally hit the 120 mark and experienced exactly what you have described. I took it back to the importer and they confrimed they forgot to fit the limiter. Once fitted problem solved. Now i know your car is alraedy de-limited as you have not had high speed problems before, however this sounds like the limiter is failing and has returned the car to its stock settings. I hope it’s a faulty de-limiter, certainly sounds like the speed limiter the way it backs off like that, and no warning lights is a good sign! Does 4th gear work okay at slower speeds? The thing is it could be faulty within the box. Im going to stick my neck out here and say im 100% certain its the delimiter. Hope im right as thats a cheap fix. FaithStalker Posted July 4, 2003 Author Share Posted July 4, 2003 Well after reading quite a few articles in the "SEARCH" about this it certainly sounds like a delimiter problem.... and this sparked a little memory i had of last nights "run" with ChrisR, as i came off the private track and went home on normal roads around a few islands, i heard a rattle and something rolling around coming from the passenger side of the car....... could this be something to do with the ECU/delimiter ?!?!?! could something have come off....... i usually put my steering lock down in the passenger footwell, i wonder if its hit something or somethings come lose! hmmmm i'm feeling a little less panicy now about the whole thing, as it does sound like its being limited - and in that case its not such an expensive fix Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They are specific to his de-limiter but should give you an idea of what's going on behind there! Digsy Posted July 4, 2003 Share Posted July 4, 2003 Tony, If you take your dash off you will find your "delimiter" behind the IP. Mine had its power and negative leads screwed to terminals on the IP circuit board, and then "crimp" bullet type connectors for the speed signal. The box itself was not supported or fixed down in any way - it was just rattling around behind the IP on its wires. It should be pretty easy to spot which wires they cut to convert the speed signal so maybe you can put the wiring back to diagnose this yourself? Incidentally, the JIC "delimiter" isn't really a delimiter. They just feed the ECU with the same 5/8 signal that the speedo and odo gets. (he's also servicing it anyway) and may secretley without telling the MISSES decat it !!!!!!!! Five screws for the dash, unclip all the panels. You cannot put the plugs back in the wrong sockets. Then its just four screws to get the IP forward on its loom. Go on. Do it. Doooooo iiiiiiiiiiit!! Digsy Posted July 4, 2003 Share Posted July 4, 2003 Yep, you have to remove the whole dash, but it all clips together once you have the five screws out along the underside of the top part. IP = Instrument Panel - the assembly of the three dials. It is held in with four screws. Once you tilt it forward you can remove the three colour coded plugs that go into it and remove that. If your installation is like mine (it should be, we bought our cars from JIC at about the same time) you should be able to see exactly which wires were cut to fit the delimiter. My speed delimiter has occasions when it doesn't de-limit and has exacly the same symptoms as yours. If I turn off the ignition and then re-start, it's all back to normal again. Mines done it about 3 times in 20 months... I'm sure there was a thread about this sometime back and I know I'm not alone with the intermittant speed delimiter... Went to overtake a car, squeezed the throttle, passed 100.....110.....115....Buuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrr....115....110......115.....Buuurrrrrrrrrrrr. I though I'd broken something.!
